My GGGrandfather died at Rainhill Lunatic Asylum in 1895. I'm trying to learn the circumstances under which he entered or was committed there. Does anyone know who I can contact.

Merseyside records office hold the admission and discharge records,
so this may be a good place to start,
Lancashire archives site may be of use to you as a guide to what is held ,
-
It is also possible his funeral may have taken place at St Mary the Virgin Prescot,

What is his name John :-X

Hi Radcliff,
This is my first use of Rootschat! I'm not sure if I'm replying correctly, as the help, line is down.
Anyway, my GGGrandfather's name was John Rimmer he was born 1949 in Whiston and I'm fairly sure his funeral was at St Mary's, Prescot.
Thanks for your help

Sorry Radcliff, My chronology is out, Ellen would have been his Aunt if in fact she was related.
His father was John Rimmer b. 1808, I am unsure of his parents or siblings.

There is a John Rimmir baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Prescot, Lancashire.
12th September 1849, parents John Rimmir and Jane.
They lived in Whiston and John ( father ) was a tool maker.
Could tie in with the marriage of John Rimmer and Jane Battersby that Radcliff posted.
-
1861 census gives John (1808 ) born in Rainhill.
All maybes but he names one of his daughters Alice. Parents could be Richard and Alice on Radcliff's post.
No help for John 1849 though, sorry.

Many thanks, Radcliff, and Louisa May, I think you have put me on a different and possibly correct path re John Rimmer 1808. His father in law had an illegitimate child to an Esther Large, I know he was paying a maintenance order to her. I have him from a different parentage, e.g. Richard Rimmer so it need thinking about. There many Rimmers, unfortunately they all lived in the same areas.
Cheers,
John
