Title: Otho and John Hamilton, Waterford, Edinburgh.
Post by: janham on Saturday 10 July 04 17:23 BST (UK)
Hello everyone,

I hope you can help with some of my queries, this is my first posting so I hope it's OK.

I am researching my Hamilton ancestors, I have Otho and John Hamilton who lived in Waterford from about 1800.  Otho and John were eminent musicians, Otho taught violin to the Waterford Composer William Wallace between the years 1825 to 1827.  Both Otho and John went on to become Professor's of Music.  I am trying to find some record of their education but as I don't know where they attended school I have no idea where to look, it may have been Waterford but it may have been further afield, can anyone point me in the right direction.

I am also researching another Otho Hamilton he was one of the "Olivestob" Hamilton's from Edinburgh.  He served in Phillips' 40th Regiment of Foot, he was stationed in Nova Scotia and he became Major and in 1744 was appointed Leiut Govenor of Placentia, Newfoundland.  He remained at Placentia until 1764 when he took up permanent residence at Waterford.  I would love to know more about his military career, there may even be a picture of him somewhere, that would be my ultimate find, would anyone know how I could find out more about him.

I beleive the census' for Waterford were destroyed by fire but have been told they exsist for 1901 and 1911, would anybody be able to tell me if I can view them online.

Thank you all for your time.

Jan

I am researching Rev William Fredric Tucker Hamilton (1856-1944) who was the great great grandson of Otho d1770. there are a number of on-line resources which I have found useful. If you have not already tried the following look at www.quintinpublications.com  (http://www.quintinpublications.com) and look for "The Olivestob Hamiltons". there are also some Hamilton wills available to download. I would be interested to know your interest in this line.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the reply,  I have traced my family back as far as the 1821 census for Waterford.  My research has led me to believe that the line originates from the Olivestob Hamilton although I must stress I have yet to find the documented evidence.
I have in Waterford one Otho Hamilton born about 1800 his father was a John Hamilton from Edinburgh.  I have not been able to find a birth record for this John (this is my brick wall).   There are a couple of reasons why I think they may be from the Olivestob Hamiltons, the forenames of the family seem to follow through the generations,  and Otho in itself is a fairly unusual name.  The second reason is the Edinburgh connection and thirdly the Waterford connection, also I have a transciption of the Waterford News from 1917 it which both my Otho from Waterford who became a Professor of Music and Otho born Olivestob Governor of Placentia are mentioned in the same article.
I already have copies of 3 Hamilton wills, Otho died 1770, and that of his brother John who was married to Mary Handfield and also that of his son Otho who was married to Catherine Hawtrey.  I have seen the Olivestob Hamilton book you refer to for sale on the internet, I'm saving my pennies to buy it.
I am aware of the Otho you refer to he married Dorothea Tucker in 1852, my quest is to find the link from my John on the 1821 Census born about 1779 and the Olivestob Hamilton's.  The John who married Mary Handfield had a son John and also a son Otho, I believe this John could be my Waterford John.  Sorry it get's very confusing but there are that many Otho and Johns it's easy to get confused.  Oh and family legend has it that my Waterford John was a friend of Robbie Burns in Edinburgh, yet another trail to follow.
Thanks for the link I will have a look.

Regards
Jan

Jan

You really need  "The Olivestob Hamiltons" book!
It follows the line you are researching from Olivestob to Nova Scotia to Waterford.
I am researching Rev William Fredric Tucker Hamilton.
He was the great great grandson of Otho who died in Waterford in 1770.
William was vicar of St John's Church in Woking, Surrey in 1880, raised the money to build Christ Church in the town centre, became the first Vicar of Christ Church, raised the money to build another Church to the east of Woking and bought the land and paid for the building of St Mary of Bethany Church also in Woking in 1907. phew!
My connection comes with deciding to write a centenial book for St Mary of Bethany for 2007. William Hamilton became a very interesting sideline which has now become my priority. I also found out that I am related!
Jan,how are you related?

Richard

Hi Richard,

I am seeking the link between my John Hamilton born about 1779 who was living in Waterford 1821, this John was my GGG Grandfather.  As I mentioned in my posting I have yet to find the link to the Olivestob Hamilton's but all my research so far leads me to believe there is a connection.  I think my John Hamilton could be one of the grandson's of Otho (Governor of Placentia).

I have quite a lot of material about the Olivestob Hamilton's, I am planning a trip to Olivestob now Bankton House in October, it has now been converted to flats but I still want to go and explore the area.

If while doing your own research you find anything that you think could help me I would be very grateful if you could let me know, or if there is anything you think I could help you with please let me know.
Regards

i am trying to find "you" I sent you an email the other day, i was just after looking at the Hamilton family tree that you did , what a great job( :)I have done all the family tree on Edwards side and i am going to share it with you by Drop box, a lot of the tree that i did has pictures and dates it is done by document form.i have just finished the Deegan family tree and i have got all the grave stones and houses in it i am trying to do the same with the Hamiltons.I will try and find out more about Edward first wife and the children that where put in the good Shepard's, this is a very fine line with some of the people involved can be a bit difficult to reason with.
Iam Anne Drealans brother, i did met you in waterford but Liz (GBH) was ill on the day so it was hard for me to converse with you, Anne gave me a look you great work on the Hamiltons just a few week back so iam  not really up to speed yet, but in time i will
