Title: Marriage of BROWN & GLEN in Port Elizabeth 1847
Post by: louiseanne on Friday 05 July 13 05:37 BST (UK)
James Gordon GLEN and Mary BROWN were wed in St. Mary's, Port Elizabeth on 3rd of December 1847, according to the "Greenock Advertiser". Could someone please direct me on where I could apply to get a Marriage Certificate please? I'm hoping to get some info on James, such as birthplace or parent's names. Many thanks.

Hi found a picture of the grave of James Glen at this link http://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1658158 and I found a death notice for him.
DEPOT     KAB  SOURCE    MOOC  TYPE      LEER 6/9/94
SYSTEM    01    REFERENCE 8653    PART 1  1DESCRIPTION  GLEN, JAMES. DEATH NOTICE.  STARTING 1861   ENDING    1861.
KAB is Cape Town and James died in the Cape so his estate file was sent to Cape Town.

Have a look at the post by Empea to see what info can be found in an estate file. Will send you a PM on how to get a copy of this record.

Regards Derek

Can anyone on this thread help please? I am researching my Wife's (Dawn Wood) family and she is a direct ancestor of James Glen through his Daughter Mary, b. 1825 and Husband John Wood, b.abt 1826. If anyone has any additional information about this family, I would really appreciate it. I am working from the UK and do not have direct access to SA records. There is some information on the Wood side which is descended from the Wood-Penny 1820 Settler family but I have some frustrating gaps.

Thanks

p.s. please ignore the scary picture, I'm OK once the full Moon has ended

DEar Richard,
how interesting - I was just looking at this post yesterday after many months  and the next day - there you are! I hate to disappoint you but I do not believe we have a connection. My James Glen (born 1821ish) married Mary Brown (born1826 in Greenock) in Port Elizabeth, SA 4 Dec 1847. They had 3 children tthen travelled to Australia in 1854.
Cheers
Louise

Louise

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my message. It seems we are not connected except through our mutual passion for our past. Good luck with your research.
