Hi
I'm doing research into the above Patrick GAVIN who came to NSW Australia in 1842 with his wife Mary nee BYRNE and children aboard the "Ann Milne"
Patrick is the son of Hugh GAVIN and Ann LANE . Ann was still alive in 1842 when her son came to Australia. On the immigration papers it say's
that Patrick was from Barrowstown - Kildare, he was a carpenter/wheelwright born c 1804 (baptised by Mathias Tierney, P.P., Curragh) {Catholic}
I'm trying to find more information on Hugh and Ann to see if they had any more children and general information. We think more of the Gavins may have come to NSW. Kind regards and many thanks Dianna

Hi Dianna,
I'm also looking into Patrick Gavin and his family. Patrick & Mary are my husband's 3x great grandparents. I have been a bit stumped as the shipping records give their place of origin as Barrowstown, co Kildare, and there is no such place that I can find in Kildare. I have been looking at the Tithe Applotment Books to try and find any trace of the Gavin, Burns, Lane or Tobin families in a small area. Your post alerted me to his baptism in Carragh, which I had overlooked.
All 4 family names are represented in the parish of Carragh in the Tithe Books (1820's - 1830's).
The other clue is that Patrick's nieces, Bridget & Catherine, who travelled to Australia with them have their place of origin as Thomastown, which is also in parish of Carragh.
Have you done any research into Catherine or Bridget? I have identified possible marriages for both of them in the NSW records, and it is possible that these certificates or their death certs may provide clues on the name of their father (Patrick's brother)
If I come up with anything else, I will get back to you.

Hi Katrina
Very nice to find another researcher of the Gavin family. I haven't done much research into the two nieces but it seems like a logical place to start to find siblings of Patrick!! Is it possible that Barrowstown could be BARRETSTOWN, not sure just googled it and there is a Barretstown Castle and it's in Kildare, maybe worth checking. One of the reasons I was curious to see if any more of the Gavin's came to Australia is that there was another Gavin, Francis I think who had the Emerald Isle hotel (after Eliza had it) don't know if this is a coincidence or not (perhaps a cousin) but I would like to find out more about the family back in Kildare. Hope to hear from you again kind regards Dianna
