As a novice to this I have been exploring the sites I hear of.
Genes Reunited Tips Board seems to be a chat room and generally unrelated to genealogy.
I have just noticed a list of abbreviations on the site which seem to relate to text messaging.
Thank the Lord I found Rootsweb and didn't part company with any money to GR

Hi David
On GenesReunited site if you go to community , then click on "trying to find " & enter surname , you may have more luck. Kerri

Is there a quick search at the top of the page? You could try entering a name. A list should come up. It is only worth paying if you want to contact someone.

Yep, all of those facilities are available.
I'll try them. It just seems that their Tips Board ( which is where I presume a novice starts ) has turned into a virtual chatroom. All rather odd. Some sort of a mini club.
Beats me
Thanks for your help folks.

I do not bother with Genes Reunited now I have found Rootschat but I did find a fairly close relative through that site and I am now in regular contact with him.
We have helped each other out alot with the family history. My great grandfather and his grandfather were brothers. He lives down south whereas I am in Nottingham but he visits his father only 4 miles from me quite regularly.
I am going to suggest we meet sometime. We have swapped photos and lots of family information.

There was a long thread on this subject recently and many people tended to download their GEDCOM files to GR as a place to store a back-up and also in case somebody wanted to contact them. I have had a number of approaches from people in GR, but only one has turned out to be related. Having said that, this rellie has helped me enormously, so YMMV

Looks as though somebody should stick up for Genes Reunited! Recently the powers that be at GR have clamped down on "misuse" of the Tips Board and it seems to have quietened down. If you put a request for help up on there, believe me, you will get plenty of people looking things up for you and coming up with ideas to help. I have made contact with quite a few fourth- or fifth-cousins on GR and exchanged info with them. So why not give it a try?

I've been with GR for a couple of years now, their general topics board tends to be a lot of chit chat, but their tips board can be very helpful, there is a lady there who knows absolutely everything about computors and will help everyone, I have found this very helpful in the time I have been on there, where else would you get free advise about computors, I've also had a few hits with finding rellies that I wouldn't have found without their help, personnally I think its worth a go,and its not expensive. ::)

I'm very new to RootsChat but I've been with Genes Reunited for a few months now and was very excited when I successfully connected with a second cousin and found out that my grandmother also frequented that site. I haven't had much luck using the message board part of the site because as mentioned, there seems to be a lot of general chatting going on, but the search and tree matching features are fantastic. Of course I'm new to RootsChat so I've not had a chance to learn how they compare. :-)

Hi, I use both RootsChat & GenesReunited - both are excellent for what you want to use each for. If you want census & parish records look ups, or general info discussions then RootsChats is better by far (in my opinion). If you want to record your family tree & search their large database for your ancesters then GR's the site for that purpose. Obviously if you find a likely ancestor of yours, entered by someone else, & you want to contact them, you have to pay a fee. You can of course. hope that the other party coughs up, & contacts you. Through GenesReunited I have just located & contacted a descendant of my great-grandfather, & now we are discussing a mutual relative. Through RootsChat I have had many good responses to queries raised - & have been reunited with a chap I went to school with 40 years ago - so who needs other sites.
Keep searching - John P
