Title: Java Script query
Post by: polidor on Tuesday 02 July 13 14:26 BST (UK)
Java script---what is it?

Have for the last year paid council tax online--now for some reason the page you fill with your details tell me it cant accept my details as I am using Java script.

I went off to the Council offices and asked had they changed their page for 'paying' and was told it must be MY computer that has altered in some way!

So--any idea what I can do to get rid of java script and get back to normal--nothing else on my p.c appears to have changed in any way. ::)

can you clarify and give some details of the error message you get when you try using the council page and which browser program you use.

Javascript is a form of computer language normally used to allow interaction between the likes of your browser program and the council web site - in that example the script would be on the council web page and your browser would interpret its instructions and display them to you e.g a drop down style menu, a multiple choice style etc.

This Rootschat page uses Javascript as do many others and if this is displaying and working for you then it may be a compatability issue or possibly an over zealous security call by your browser as regards the council site but it is unlikely to be something you have installed.

I have found that a large No of 'official bodies' rely on Internet Explorer, Microsoft in their wisdom did not stick strictly to the written convention of program protocol?
Programs like Firefox expose these failing of Microsoft when errors appear as you have found.
Using Internet Explorer should end your problems.

Thanks to you both for replies.

Falkyrn--I have posted what appears when I try to submit my details.

Calverly Lad--I already use Internet Explorer.

what that error message is saying is that you need to turn javascript on

what is probably happening is that you have IE10 and the council website hasn't been updated to identify your browser as being javascript enabled and it returns the error message

1 try compatability view - find it under Tools on the menu bar and enter their website address there or

2) you could try fooling it that you have IE 9 go to their site press F12 and a window opens up under Browser mode on the menu bar select IE9

PS The bottom line is that the fault is theirs not anything you have done.

Your p.s made me smile--I told the woman the other side of the counter that I had NOT altered my p.c and had made an online payment in March this year, had trouble last month and ended up paying by phone. When it happened again today for this months payment I took myself off to the Council and said my piece but she would have it that my pc was at fault and they were blameless ::)

What with this and bl**** wheelie bins incorrectly delivered ARGHHHHH   ;D

I will investigate your suggestions--thank you.

Home users update their software far more often than many corporate bodies especially local councils where an IT department has to approve and check any and all such updates to make sure that they don't bring their whole system crashing down around their heads. The problems occur when Browsers change internally so that the systems no longer recognise them (as I believe may have happened in your case) and it sometimes takes a while for an IT department to roll out a fix.

The March problem and this one are probably linked as IE10 was rolled out to all Windows 7 (SP1) systems in February this year

Just had to add this attachment---I was going to try Falkryn's  'compatability' suggestion but just tried going to the 'Pay Tax' page first and found this--

Do you think it's something I said ;D ;D

polidor:
The Javascript error you are experiencing is caused by Javascript being turned off in your browser.
You need to re-enable this to communicate with the council and many other websites.
Javascript is used to enable cookies with various sites so you can be remembered along with many other things such as which browser and os you are using.
Javascript can also be used to download trojans, worms, keyloggers  and such like in the background whilst you are surfing the web, unbeknown to the user.

The 500 Internal Server Error is a very general HTTP status code that means something has gone wrong on the web site's server but the server could not be more specific on what the exact problem is.

Most of the time, "gone wrong" means an issue with the page or site's programming, nothing you have anything to do with.

Note: More specific information about the cause of a particular HTTP 500 error is often provided when it occurs on a server using Microsoft IIS software. Look for numbers after 500 as in HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error which means Configuration data is invalid.
You can then report the error to the relevant authorities to alert them to a problem.

 ;D ;D

With reference to the 2nd attachment-----500 internal error

I have altered NOTHING on my pc--went to the 'payment' page out of curiosity and lo and behold-----it would accept all my details.

It was obviously their end that had changed and is now [at least for now!] has returned to normal

I think you're right and that your second visit which returned the 500 error happened to coincide with an update at their end. Given that you changed nothing and didn't get to use the compatability possibles that what we suspected at the beginning was the cause and that their IT department has now upgraded their system to acknowledge and accept IE10.

Hello, Javascript is a computer language that webpages use to provide functionality on your web browser. It can do things like check that what you have input into a form is valid and other more complicated things. Most sites require you to have javascript enabled rather than disabled, but you can disable it in the preferences of your web browser - depending on which one you are using, IE, Firefox, Chrome etc, the process is slightly different.
