Hi folks
Opinions on these initials/abbreviations please.
It looks like "Yours affectionately" (though written badly) with some initials under it which I believe are G.M.L. and under those I think it says K.C.B. (Knight Commander of the Bath?????)
All opinions most welcome
Regards
Elliot

It looks like k c b to me. If you google k c b and look at Wikipedia you can eventually see a list of every holder since 1815. there are a lot ;D ;D ;D ;D

Cheers,
Indeed there are, but none with the combination of initials I propose. If indeed they are initials :-( ?? :-)
It's a shame I can't narrow down the list by decade. Could be a help.

I initially thought GML but of course it might be GWL.

Hello -
It could be EML.

I thought E.W L and it looks a bit like "your affectionate brother " with affectionate shortened as he was running out of space ! ;D

Your affec . ate (word unknown)
GML
KCB
What is this written on? Looks like the back of a photo?
If you want a date for these initials you may be able to get the card dated. Post the whole image plus edges and I'm someone will have a go at dating it for you.
I would suggest that you change the title of this thread to add that you would like a postcard/photo (or whatever document it is) dated.

Hello -
The unknown word may be 'brother'.

I agree with "affectate brother", but I think the second abbreviation is just "K.B." If you look at the (presumed) name initials, there's a very clear full stop after each letter, and as the second abbreviation has only two full stops, I'm inclined to think it's just two letters, with a flourish to start the B.

Well spotted Arthur - I think you might be correct. :)
-
Possibly! After writing the card, he has gone back and added a thin line around all his letters and I wonder if there is another full stop at the bottom of the "K", with the line enclosing them both the letter and the dot.
-
Agree with Mike ...I think there is a dot at the bottom of the K .... just really close... ;)

Hello -
There is a full stop after the K - and there is also one after the C, which would rule out there only being two letters, I think.

kcb I think but could the gml bit be emh
-
Hmm, perhaps you're all right about there being 3 letters. Looking again, I can see that the bit at the end of the K does look as though it could have been added later, rather than flowing on as part of the same pen stroke.
So if he's not been found as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, can KCB stand for anything else?

I see it as V.M.L. for the first initials and I agree with K.B. as the second.
