Title: Hove Cemetery, Grave lookup (and photo?)
Post by: PK-KTK on Sunday 30 June 13 11:39 BST (UK)
I'm hoping someone can help me please. I'm trying to locate a Cemetery Reference point for my paternal grandparents who are buried in Hove Cemetery, Brighton, and if possible, a photo of the grave/s.

Herbert Edward Whitehead - died 18 July 1963, aged 71 - World War 1 Veteran
Olive Marjorie Whitehead - died 23 Sept 1980, aged 72
(yes, those dates and ages are correct, there was quite a large difference in age)

My father thinks from memory, that they are on the north side of Old Shoreham Road, and are closer to it than to Rowan Ave, and that they are on the eastern side of the entrance gates.
He sent me the attached image of where he thinks it is, but he's not entirely certain, as he last visited (from Australia) in 1996, and was sure he had taken a photo at that time, but can not locate the photo.
He is pretty sure they are buried together though, and he remembers that there was a headstone in 1996.

Is there anyone in the area, able to help with locating this grave, and possibly a photo as well?

From an Aussie who never met her paternal grandparents - thanks  :)

Hi,

I'll have a look for you (and take photos) - unless anyone beats me to it - I know the area well and am not far away, but am unlikely to get there until the week after next.

Liz (who has only just realised she has been "talking" to you on the other thread!)

 :'(  :'(

I looked all over the section you marked on the map but I completely failed.  The graves seem to be systematically in rows until the 1950s and then it becomes a bit haphazard so although I saw several from the 1960s I couldn't find your grandparents' grave - I am very sorry.

However, there was a notice up saying that if you need help to go to Woodvale and the last time I went to the office there to ask for help finding a grave in the Brighton Cemetery they were really helpful and gave me a little map (free) with the exact spot marked and other things marked for reference.

I didn't have time to go to Woodvale today but will try and get there in the next week or so and see if I can find the grave when I am armed with a plan - I don't like being defeated.  :'(

Very sorry!

Liz

Thanks Liz, and no need for apologies - it may yet prove that my 72 year old father's memory of the location is incorrect (it has been 17+ years since he was there in person)

Thanks for your time today, and if you do get to Woodvale and find the location, thank you in advance for your time and the looking again. It is much appreciated.

Wondering if someone might be able to contact Woodvale for me and find the location of Herbert & Olive please? I'd like to be able to record their location correctly, even if a photo of the headstone is not possible.

Thanks

Here are the contact details, I don't know what information they can give you but worth a try.

Thank you for those contact details JohninSussex and my apologies to Liz_in_Sussex, it appears that my father's memory was not quite accurate as I have received a very prompt reply from one of the staff at Woodvale.

Section 12, grave 61 is the correct location.

Not too far out, but far enough for problems to occur.
From the cemetery map I was sent, I believe they are in the red box area.

Thank you both for your help.
