Hi folks, having no access to much in the way of good websites, can I kindly ask for a look-up on these people?
I have inherited hoards of unnamed photographs of people from Oldham, probably majority are family, but very very few are named! The vast majority are of people from the Salvation army (uniforms are a giveaway, also bandsmen etc...).
Harry was born the 8th January, 1869, and Mary 28th March, 1882. I believe Harry's parents were Elizabeth and James. No ideas on Mary Seanor. Harry went to Canada for a time in 1892, came back, and then moved to New Zealand in 1901 after his marriage.
I would just like to know about sisters, brothers, parents of the above, so I can work out photographs. Any thoughts on who to contact as archivists about the early Salvation Army in Oldham would be a great resource too I believe.
Many thanks. (I think Census of 1871, 1881, 1891, and possibly 1901 should be a great help).

That is super, had next door to nothing on these people. Hopeful of identifying Mary Seanor, and then to place her in a possible family photo with the people you are mentioning. Many thanks.

Harry Adams married Mary Seanor in 1901 Oldham Register Office or Registrar attended. If it was a Salvation Army wedding, the Registrar would need to attend.
Do you know where Harry was born?

Hi there, I have Harry born in Buckingham (written on a later on birth certificate from New Zealand).
Thanks.
-
Hi
I am finding it difficult to find Harry.
Without giving names of people still living, do you have names for any of his children so that I can look to see if they were named after his parents or siblings?
Heather
-
What was Harry's job?
-
The NZ Historical BMD Index shows a few children born to Harry and Mary..
James ADAMS 1907
Harry ADAMS 1905
Ethel ADAMS 1903
William ADAMS 1910
Not that helpful really given that the SEANOR children had these names except for Harry

Very good point. This is from a book insert that my great grandmother wrote.
Harry came to New Zealand in 1901 with his wife Mary, he also brought his parents, his fathers name was James (I believe) and he died on the boat coming over. Wife's name was Elizabeth, and she died in New Zealand about 1930 at the age of 81.
Harry and Mary Adams children were Ethel (1903-1997, my Great Grandmother).
Harry jnr. (1905-1984).
James (1907-1977).
William (1910-1986).
And Les who was adopted.
Harry senior died 1949, and his wife Mary died in 1963.
-
Forgot to mention that Harry Adams came over with his sister as well, Sarah, she married a John James (Jack) Arnold. Hope that helps you narrow things down.
From what I know, these people are the staunch Salvation Army people, Harry was described as a Corps. Sergeant Major.
Have just found some more: Sarah Arnold died in 1961, aged 88, might help find her birthdate. John James Arnold died in 1944 at the age of 73.
Thanks.

I wonder if these are Harry's parents, given their birthplaces and where they are living at this time..

Maybe Elizabeth had a previous marriage? Still no sign of Harry or Sarah I see at this time, which is a bit strange. The dates look correct though.
Thank you for all the efforts.
PS: Now looking at the dates, I suspect that Catherine's middle name is Sarah.
Almost 10pm here, and a work day tomorrow, thank you for your ongoing efforts, I have been busy trying to match photographs to people tonight as well, so an extremely encouraging evening.

Most probably Catherine has Sarah as a middle name... and wondering if William H HUNT is actually Harry ??

Well spotted, I think you are bang on the money, what a real surprise!
Don't mind the workhouse piece (it is what it is) and it makes sense that they tried to give something back in later years, as Salvation Army recruits. Makes for a really interesting story now, and it seems there could be more to come!

Work day for me tomorrow too.. but over this side of the ditch I have a few hours of fun yet before sleep time... ;D ;D

Wow, you have been busy. I have been busy since work ended, on scanning photos I am sure of, they are helping with the ones that I am not.
One album in particular looks very much a Seanor one. Distinctive eyes! Thanks ever so much, it seems this one is not quite done yet.
Ok, have had a very long and extensive look at this good work. My feelings are that William Henry Hunt was an illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hunt jnr. (who was unmarried in 1871, but should be the mother it seems by my maths). William Henry Hunt becomes Harry Adams later on when his mother does marry. What a cool story!! Thanks for finding this all for us.
Still excited to see about the Salvation army Corps, the family bible suggests 250th Corps, Oldham. Any suggestions gladly taken!
-
According to the baptism that I found yesterday, Elizabeth is in fact the mother of William Henry HUNT. The more I look at things, I am fairly sure that he became Harry ADAMS, everything fits including the sister Sarah .. or rather Catherine Sarah.
Did you want further back for any of these families if possible??
Karenlee
-
Thank you for the offer, but only do it if you feel there is something you missed, with what you have found, I now have a very solid family tree. More sometimes is less, as I would like to try and match as many pictures to people as I can. Knowing children has helped hugely. The photos are obviously about 1860-1890, so the people described would fall into that era.
For instance I see that Mary Seanor (became Adams) only had the one sister, Ethel (who married William Perry), this should help in the photo department. I believe I have already got the match.
I will put some thought into it and get back to you.
-
Thought a face to a name would be nice.
-
:) Just bumping this up in the hope that someone will know their relationships to these people. I have found no living relatives yet in England. So if the Adams/Seanor name rings a bell from Oldham or Rochdale, please sing out!
I have probably about 100 photos that need identifying, as the years roll by, this is only going to get harder. They had strong links with the Salvation Army in the 1880's onwards too.
Merry Christmas!
