Hi,
I am looking for advice on where to find Sarah Jane Robson's parents. She appears to have been born in Stockton, according to the 1861 Greatham census where she lives with her grandfather, James Robson. Also in the 1881 census, her birth place is listed as Stockton. Her marriage license to John William Stainthorp lists no father, although John's father is listed. Her grandfather was a coastguard man, so thought maybe his son was of the sea also. Her grandfather lists her as his beneficiary. Would his will list whether he had children or other grandchildren? I have found her death certificate, which lists her age as 67 in 1902. The burial I found lists her age as 73 for a burial 3 days later at St. John's in Greatham so may not be her burial record, I understand. I do believe she was buried at St Johns as I found a headstone there that had her name and the name of her husband, while we were on vacation there. I found a baptismal record that is close for 1841 but that age would be a bit off and also states she was born in Tynemouth. Any suggestions or ideas that may help? I am just stuck.
Thanks,
Kathy

Given that no father is listed on her marriage cert I would think she is the daughter of an unmarried daughter of James Robson.
Here's a possible baptism for her
11 Sept 1835 St Thomas, Stockton on Tees
Sarah Jane Robson, mother Sophia Robson
How far have you researched James' family? Did he have a daughter Sophia?
Cheers

There have been so many James Robson's to trace, I got discouraged. I had not thought that she might be illegitimate. That does give me more to follow, though. I think you are right about the Strugnell family. Susannah was a witness to their marriage. What city was the Strugnell family in?
Thank you so much.

Sophia Robson and William Strugnell married in Guisborough registration district June 1/4 1839. So it would appear Sarah Jane Robson is the daughter of Sophia Robson, a spinster.

In 1871 Susannah Strugnell aged 29 is a visitor in the household of James Robson. Not sure why she wouldn't be listed as his granddaughter as Sarah J Stainthorp is, only think I can think is the Stainthorp's lived with James whereas Susannah didn't but was there on the night of the census.

The 1851 census for the Strugnell's and Sarah Robson is Ormesby, Yorkshire.

And Sarah Jane's birth would be too earrly to have a birth record of, isn't that correct? but possibly a baptismal record would exist?
This has been quite helpful.

Yes, I noticed the baptism just as I posted. How did you know to look for Sarah with Sophia? Curious, I guess. I tried looking up Susannah Strugnell and never found that 1851 census. Would Sophia's marriage license give me more answers?
And do you think that the Greatham burial record would be hers? or should I look other places?
I am usually good at finding links but not good at this type of posting, as you can see.
Thanks again.

And is it possible to find a will for James Robson or Sophia Strugnell? would it be worth the time spent?

What answers are you wanting from Sophia's marriage cert?
What are the details on her death cert and those on the burial? Didmshe die at Greatham?

If your opening post you mention James Robson's will, have you not already got a copy of it?
Sophia doesn't appear in the probate index so she didn't leave a will.

James Robson mentioned Sarah Jane in his coastguard pension, which I found online. Probate records, according to ancestry.com, has little money being left and her husband, John William was executor; less than 100 pounds. I would send for the will, but have no idea where to send for it. If Sophia is her mother, then James Robson would be listed on her birth or baptismal record as her father and then I could prove or disprove who her mother is, as well. I have a possible mother but without a birth record I cannot prove it. I couldn't find a will for William Strugnell either.
This is once again getting exciting.

Burials, Hartlepool District - Record Number: 654191.2 (Durham Records Online)
Location: Greatham
Church: St. John the Baptist
Denomination: Anglican
27 Sep 1902 Sarah Jane Stainthorp, of Greatham, age: 73, plot B19A
Her death certificate lists her cause of death as carcinoma, hepatis. J. G. Armstrong, son-in-law, is present at her death. Her husband is listed as John Willliam Stainthorp, tailor, (master) (retired). She was 67 years old. Her death was 24 Sept 1902. [Note: discrepancy between ages of death certificate and the burial record I found. One says 67; the other 73. Not sure if burial record is hers, but fits the area and the death date]
There is a headstone at St John the Baptist, Greatham, in the actual churchyard, that lists Sarah Jane Stainthorp and her husband, John William Stainthorp.
Do they fit? other than age?

Apart for the difference in age the other details match so I would say the burial you have is for your Sarah.

It will cost £6 for a copy of the will, details and a form to complete can be found here

If you get Sophia and William marriage cert James Robson should be listed as her father. We have her age and place of birth from the census so we should be able to find a baptism to confirm her mother's name etc.

I will send for the will. Thanks. Is there a link to the Shoreham, Sussex area for baptismal records?
And what made you look for Sophia as Sarah Jane's mother?
Kathy

I looked for a Sarah Robson that fitted the info in your post, the one I found had a mother Sophia.
