Title: Visiting Limerick or Tipperary???
Post by: spurs01 on Saturday 29 June 13 20:12 BST (UK)
We have a trip planned to Ireland at the end of August.  Our original plan was to stay outside of Limerick.  Now, we are looking at Tipperary as well.  I have ancestors from this area of Ireland, but will never be able to figure it out before this trip.

We want to see countryside and castles, the Ireland of my dreams.  Tipperary or Limerick?  Just need thoughts, and why you think so.  Thanks.  We'd be leaving the US on August 30, for one week only.

I realize they are close in driving distance, but we want the best experience possible.  This is a once in a lifetime trip for us, and likely our last.  Thanks!

Apart from climbing around graveyards etc (good for the figure ..)...
what do you like to do?

Mountains and lakes?
hill-walking?
castles and ruined abbeys?
boat trips?
shopping? (hate that myself, but ...)
other stuff?

Since you say you re interested in castles I d recommend " Cahir castle" and  "Rock of Cashel" both in County Tipperary.  I have not been to visit Cahir castle but it looks very impressive from the outside. Have taken the guided tour of Rock of Cashel twice. Found it v interesting. Composed of several different buildings including a round tower.   Plenty of history associated with it.  Hope you enjoy your visit wherever you decide. :)

Castles, mountains, lakes and shopping.  My figure is already ruined.  :)

Thank you.  I have been viewing images of Tipperary and came across Rock of Cashel, which looks very impressive!  We shall see where we go, if we are able to go.  I truly appreciate your responding to my post!

Oh yes, do include a visit to the "Rock Of Cashel" if you're able to  - it's far more impressive than the photographic images show.  :)
[ I too had ancestors from Tipperary and made the pilgrimage to Cashel from my home in New Zealand, back in 2011.]

It's a lovely stroll up to the "Rock" from Cashel township where you pass the local museum (housed in a quaint thatched-roofed building), and which I enjoyed viewing also.

Wishing you a wonderful time in Ireland.  :)
