Title: Big thick brick wall - Margaret Dalzell Cooke
Post by: Miss Poohs on Friday 28 June 13 23:29 BST (UK)
Hello everyone - I'm struggling, really struggling, can anyone offer any advice?

Here's what I've got

Maggie Todd marries William Robert Cooke June 1910 in Belfast Ireland.

They have 4 children

Margaret Dalzell Cooke, Eveline Cooke (1913 - 1989), Agnes May Cooke (1913 - 1919), William Robert Cooke (1917 - 1994).

As you can see I've got some info on all but one of the children, Margaret D Cooke.

She was born in Ireland around 1911, moves to Glasgow and in 1941 marries James Hunter, but I can't find a birth or death for her.

I know she was still alive in the early 1970s (living in Scotland) but can't find a death cert for her.

Can anyone offer any pointers?

Is this the parents at 1911:

How have you calculated birth year for Margaret -  age on marriage certificate? Certainly, if born in or around 1911, she should be on the Irish Civil Registration Index, but record not obvious there at moment. Could be mis-transcribed, could be born elsewhere, etc. Were the other children all born Belfast?

Is this them in 1911?

She could have been registered just as Margaret or without first name(s)

Yes that's them - I can't find any record of the birth of the daughter Margaret D Cooke.

Do you have her husbands death cert? If not, I would try that. It may show if 1) he died quite young because then she may have remarried and her death is not registered as Hunter or 2) that he was a widower and then you can narrow down her death.

There was a Margaret Cooke birth registered in Belfast Oct – Dec 1915 Volume 1, page 218. Could that be her?

Gr8scot - after she married mr hunter she went on have 3 sons her eldest son wasn't her husbands, although he did adopt that son when he was about 15.
It wasn't a happy marriage, and she left her husband and sons in the mid 1950s, when the youngest was about 2 - never to have any further regular contact (to my knowledge), so the husbands death cert woudnt contain any relevant info to her where abouts, mr hunter died 1976.

Elwyn - I would doubt that would be her as she had 2 sisters and a brother born 1913, 1915 and 1917.

Miss Poohs, I can't help you in this instance as you're right, there is no paper trail for Margaret. However, you seem to have left out information regarding her children. I am Margaret's Granddaughter.  :)
If there is any way we can exchange a private message on here, that would be great. I am interested in finding out what relation you are to Margaret, and therefore to me.

Once LiverScot has made 3 posts then you can both exchange recent family details and personal information offline.

Is Margaret's supposed age calculated from her marriage certificate? (this was asked in reply #1 but I didn't see an answer).

Thanks aghadowey - yes, it's calculated from other certs, as we've never been able to find exact birth documents - a real mystery.

Miss Poohs,

GRONI in Belfast keep the statutory birth records. I suggest you ring them and ask them to search for Margaret’s birth for you. There is a birth search facility on their computer system whereby you can enter the parents’ names whilst leaving the child’s forename blank. That search should then bring up every child born to those parents. That should find Margaret’s birth if it’s there, and provided it’s spelled Cook(e). If the birth is not quite where or when you were expecting, but was within what is now Northern Ireland, they should still find it. (That will resolve whether the 1915 birth is hers too).

GRONI will normally do that search on the spot for you. There may be a search fee as well as a fee for the certificate. (I think it depends how much searching they have to do). You can pay over the phone by debit or credit card. http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/gro

Ohh thank you Elwyn, that's great information and certainly worth a try.

I've been chipping away at this for a very long time with no success - and now I'd love to be able to help closer relatives (who I've been lucky enough to find) unravel this mystery.

For reference-

Agnes' birth rules out the 1915 Margaret.

Thanks aghadowey. I didn't mean to infringe the rules of the forum. I was just excited about finding a possible new connection.

Many thanks go to both Elwyn and aghadowey for your advice and help in this matter. Unfortunately, GRONI in Belfast, have confirmed that my Grandmother Margaret, was never registered for a birth certificate.  :'( Your assistance was and is greatly appreciated.
All is not lost though! I have made a member connection on A*******y UK, who has directed me to my Great Grandfather's WW1 service record. Contained inside are details of his children's birthdates. At that moment in time, he had three daughters only. My Grandmother was the eldest child. I now know her birthday. Yay!!
Thanks also go to Miss Poohs for trying to get some help, advice and information that would have helped us to obtain Margaret's birth certificate had it existed.
