Norway has a wealth of records digitally available and free. Here is a link you may find useful.
http://arkivverket.no/eng/content/view/full/629 (http://arkivverket.no/eng/content/view/full/629)
There are census records. This is possibly Halstein in 1865

Here are his parents and sibs
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=18&filnamn=f61254&gardpostnr=187&personpostnr=1093&merk=1093#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=18&filnamn=f61254&gardpostnr=187&personpostnr=1093&merk=1093#ovre)
and another sister Bergithe is possibly here
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=32&filnamn=f61254&gardpostnr=851&personpostnr=4999&merk=4999#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=32&filnamn=f61254&gardpostnr=851&personpostnr=4999&merk=4999#ovre)
Did you informant provide you with transcribed records or with copies of the parish registers.
You are lucky in that some of the records have been transcribed.
Johannes Andersen's parents can be found here in his baptism record
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=12&filnamn=dp12541750&gardpostnr=5139&personpostnr=19100&merk=19100#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=12&filnamn=dp12541750&gardpostnr=5139&personpostnr=19100&merk=19100#ovre)
Here is Marte's transcribed baptism record.

You should be able to find their sibs by placing the parents name in the search engine.
Here is the wedding of Johannes and Marthe in 1840

Here is the transcribed wedding of Johanne's parents Anders Olsdatter and Syneve Johannisdtr in 1804. http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=52&filnamn=HAMREVIG&gardpostnr=3853&merk=3853#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=52&filnamn=HAMREVIG&gardpostnr=3853&merk=3853#ovre)
By having transcriptions it is easier to locate them in the parish registers. For example
no 24 here is the 1840 wedding mentioned above.

Here is Syneve in 1801, but unfortunately she is not with her parents.
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=64&filnamn=f18011254&gardpostnr=144&personpostnr=2713&merk=2713#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=64&filnamn=f18011254&gardpostnr=144&personpostnr=2713&merk=2713#ovre). She is born c1777
If you look at the baptisms for Syneve with a father with forename Johanis, there are none in 1777, but there are 2 born in 1774. I believe this one is the most likely given the name of the farm namehttp://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=74&filnamn=dp12541750&gardpostnr=2049&personpostnr=6777&merk=6777#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=74&filnamn=dp12541750&gardpostnr=2049&personpostnr=6777&merk=6777#ovre)
I don't know how much you want to explore the records or if you need any further help. Kaysii

Thank you Kaysii,
I did not expect so much information
The information that I had was from about 8 years ago. Most transcribed information.
Spending the day trying to work out the records from Norway.
When I started my research all that I knew that Halstein Johnson was born in Norway 11th October 1846. My concern is that on his Australian Marriage Cert it states his parents as Andrew Johnsen and Martha Nilson. Then last week I recieved a photo and on the back reads "Andrew, Halsteins brother" and apparently died in Australia?
Many Thanks

Hi,
Do you know the birthdate of your Halsten from records in Australia? If so, it is likely that the other records you received about Halsten Johannesen are true. To make sure that you are following the right family it would be helpful to confirm where you have the information of his birthdate. I have looked through the national census 1865 but can find no other likely candidates unless he had emigrated before then.
The name Anders or Andreas is likely to be anglicised to Andrew. However the Andreas that was the brother of the Halsten in this family has died in 1889 in Norway.
Here he is in 1875 with his parents and his own family
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=f71254&gardpostnr=196&merk=196#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=f71254&gardpostnr=196&merk=196#ovre)
Here is his family in 1900
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=15&filnamn=f01257&gardpostnr=184&merk=184#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=15&filnamn=f01257&gardpostnr=184&merk=184#ovre) Andreas's son Johannes is running the farm and his mother is a widow. Here he is in 1910, but he doesn't appear to have any children.
I can't explain the marriage certificate. The only thing is that if Halsten has taken Johannesen as a surname, when he got married it might be difficult to explain that his father doesn't appear to have the same surname and so the Andreasen was given as a name and was written as a forename.

My guess is that you have the right family as the name Halsten (or its variants) is relatively rare.
If you want to go further back with this family. It is quite easy. Here is Marta Bergesdatter marriage to Ole Johannisen 2 July 1810 http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=HAMREVIG&gardpostnr=3978&merk=3978#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=HAMREVIG&gardpostnr=3978&merk=3978#ovre)
Here she is with her family on the farm mentioned in the marriage record, not only with her father and mother but also her paternal grandfather and grandmother. From this you should be able to estimate the years of birth. Her father has been married once before in 1778
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=6&filnamn=HAMREVIG&gardpostnr=3220&merk=3220#ovre (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=6&filnamn=HAMREVIG&gardpostnr=3220&merk=3220#ovre) before being widowed and marrying Ingebor

Here is the marriage of Brita Haaversdatter to Hans Olsen 1 Jan 1751
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=HAMREVIG (http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=HAMREVIG)
Here is Syneve's family in 1801 and it looks like Ole Johannisen who marries Marte Bergersdatter is probably her brother

Thank you again for the information. It is very interesting. I have always been sceptical about Andrew. Halstiens wife recorded his birth date as 11th October1846.
Thank you

I have copies of postcards sent from Norway. It appears one is from Nils Johnsen and a daughter Inga, Can anyone translate to English. They are not the best copies
