My man fathered Isabel S Hollex 1911-1936 & Lily May Hollex 1913-1986 by Ethel Mary Mills born 1895 Bury St Edmunds- no trace of marriage. Then is said to have been killed at Gallipoli- no military records. In trying to find his parents I have come up with Hollies,Hollis,Hollix, Hobit,Hollox,Lecks & Leeks. 1901 census comes up with just one Hollex in Suffolk, Susannah from Monks Eleigh. 1911 is more fruitful but there are only summary books on ancestry. Any ideas?

1911 Census they are under HORREX, full image is there :)
EDIT there is a Child in 1917 and 1924 also, Mothers maiden name Mills

Possible?
But that doesnt explain 1924 Horrex Child.
UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 about Alfred HORREX
Name: Alfred Horrex
Residence: Islington
Death Date: 31 Oct 1917
Death Location: Home
Enlistment Location: Chelmsford
Rank: Wheeler
Regiment: Royal Army Service Corps
Number: T4/243057
Type of Casualty: Died
Theatre of War: Home
This ones Death Reg seems to be;
Alfred HORREX, Dec 1917, West Derby, 8b 575, age 29 (Birth c 1887/8)
EDIT
Possibly a different Family as lots of Horrex in Essex.
Maybe this is where the confusion of Family memories that he died WW1 comes from?

On Commonwealth War Graves Commission it gives Frederick Charles Hollex's wife as E.R.Hollex of Wood Cottage Brettenham Ipswich.
Frederick Charles marriage reg is Mar qtr 1909 Stow 4a 1064
Unfortunately there are an odd number of names on page
Strangely same qtr yr and district page 1054 is |Ethel Rose Mills?????????
There are deaths on Commonwealth war graves for John Robert Hollex age 24 in 1915 and A T Hollex in 1917
They are both the sons of Charles and Elizabeth Hollex of Lower Green Felsham
so could A. T be the Alfred you are seeking ???and his middle initial has been mistranscribed??
EDIT : it looks like A.T. Hollex is ARTHUR THOMAS HOLLEX - Alfred 's younger brother
Or is it really Frederick Charles you are looking for??

Merci. Thanks to you ladies I've traced the family back through all the variations, even transcribed as Hobit on ancestry. But this doesn't solve the more recent mysteries of the missing marriage to Miss Mills, military life, & two stray children after the war. Did they just seperate & he is the Alfred who made old bones? Perhaps Ethel Mary Mills was not truthful to her children about her past, she went on to other adventures in Dorset. A few certificates needed methinks.

In the GRO index itself (as opposed to FreeBMD etc transcriptions) there are these marriage entries:
Marriages, Mar qtr 1909
George Edward AYLING
Frederick HOLLEX
Agnes Mary K BUCKLE
Ethel Rose MILLS
on the same page, Stow 4a 1064.
-
Are you certain you haven't got Frederick and Ethel Rose mixed up???
It is easy to assume Fred was short for Alfred????
Who did your Ethel marry afterwards
Isabel married in Essex -and there is a marriage for Ethel R Hollex to a Mr Baldwin - they are to be found in Essex????????

Another variation of spelling worth considering is HOLLOCKS.
I have quite a number in my tree from the Cosford Registration District in Suffolk - mainly Preston St. Mary, Kettlebaston, Brent Eleigh, Brettenham & Lavenham. I have seen this family name spelled various ways in records - Hollex, Hollix, Horrex etc.
Regrettably, I do not have a record of your Alfred Charles born in 1895.

Mystery solved Ethel married Fred & not Alfred. Thanks again.
