My relative Mary Jane Podmore was born in Burslem in 1878.There is a record of her marrying a Henry J Findley at Burslem St Paul in 1898,at least that is the way his Surname is spelt on Staffordshire BMD.It is also given as such on the Probate record of his father-in-law John Podmore who died in 1913.However it is spelt Findlay on Census records and other BMD on Ancestry.

Thanks Bel,yes as I mentioned in my PM,the family of Mary Jane are in my Tree following the marriage of my relative Ann Rowley to her father John Podmore at Wolstanton in 1871.

Hi Bel,perhaps you can tell me what happened to the Rowley family between 1861 and 1891?They seem to disappear from the Census?

William Russell Jones.

I refer to this Rowley family of James and Amy-RG/09/1930/37/17.

Hi William
I have not been able to find the Rowley family in 1871. In 1881 James and Amy are in Bycars, Burslem (as they are in 1861 and 1891) with Herbert and Annis. I would assume that they would be there in 1871 too but I cannot find a trace of them there (or anywhere else for that matter!)
Let me know if you manage to track them down!

Thanks Bel,I couldn't even see them iin 1881!I found all there children on Staffordshire BMD.I strongly suspect that the James(1845) is the James Clewes showing as born in Burslem in 1845 with a mother's maiden name of Clewes!

The James I spoke of appears to have married a Susannah Hammond at Wolstanton in 1874.Whilst they don't appear to have had any children, they are only listed as Rowley from 1901.

I have just given myself a severe reprimand! When I added what I thought were the 14 children of John Podmore and Ann Rowley I missed completely Dora born in 1891 who is with some of the Rowley family in 1901.
Regards
William Russell Jones.
-
Yes, I think you are right about James.
It took me a while to find James and Amy in 1881! I initially missed Dora - she is still living with the Rowleys under her married name of Plant in 1911. I also missed Reginald Clive too!
John Podmore (born 1874) died in unfortunate circumstances in 1890 after an accident as he was driving a cab. (John Podmore senior also ran an undertakers with his brother George (a carpenter who made the coffins) and was a cab proprietor as well as making mineral water/ginger beer etc!).
The Podmores are quite an interesting family although some of them are a bit elusive!!

Yes John Podmore senior certainly left a decent few bob at that time in 1913!
I haven't got to looking for a marriage to Dora yet!I'm adding info of the children of Lily Podmore and Elijah Kettle.I'm stuck with the apparently Joseph Reginald Goodhead who Phyllis Ann Kettle married in 1922.Whilst I can see his birth in 1896 I can't find his death anywhere?

I don't have a marriage for James Rowley (Clewes b 1845) and Susannah but I have found him in 1911 and they are listed as being married for 38 years (fits with your 1874 marriage) with 2 children. I cannot find him between 1861 and 1901. Intriguing!
I also have not managed to find a death for Joseph Reginald Goodhead - Sorry I can offer no help there!!

The Clewes(Rowley)/Hammond marriage is on Staffordshire BMD as a Civil Marriage in Wolstanton in 1874.I couldn't find any children for them?
Regards
William Russell Jones.

Just found the Hammond/Clewes marriage in 1874 - I cannot find any children either!
-
There is a James Clews born in 1874 in Burslem on Staffordshire BMD given with a mother's maiden name of "Hammonds".

I have found James and Susannah in 1881 - living in Bycars (very close to James and Amy) listed as Clowes with John E Hammond age 10.

There is a birth of a John Clews Hammonds on Staffordshire BMD given as born in Burslem in 1871 with a mother's maiden name of Hammonds.

James Clews(1874) although not showing in 1881 and 1891 looks to reappear in 1901 with wife Mary and children Amy c 1899 and James c 1900)-RG13/2595/10/11.He looks to have married a Mary Chesworth at Audley in 1897.

You've been busy!! John Clews Hammonds looks right and fits with the 1881 census. James is a bit of a puzzle though!!
I have found John Clews Hammonds under the name John Rowley in 1911 with wife Elizabeth and 6 children in Red Street Chesterton (a few doors away from James and Susannah)!
-
Yes I'm always busy, its the thrill of the chase"I'll take a look at the John and Elizabeth.

-
Looking at Hamlet's birth in 1906 in N-U-L the children seem to have the surname Hammonds.

William Russell Jones.
-
I know exactly what you mean!!
It doesn't help when they keep changing their surnames!!
-
Yes Bel,its not easy!
