Could someone kindly do a 1871 look up for me please for William Scarfe born Sept Q 1862 East Bergholt,Suffolk. I do not know his parents

Sorry, the mothers name is Sophie not Elizabeth. It looks as though Sophie was married twice
(2nd marriage to Ford)
She is at Mendlesham in 1861 with family.

I have checked the Suffolk Burial Index for you & although there are Scarf(e) burials in East Bergholt there seems to be quite a big gap around the time your chap was born - nothing between around 1838 - 1887, which may indicate they moved out of the area.
If the suggestions you have prove correct then:
William SCARFE age 34 of Mendlesham buried 16 Apr 1858 Mendlesham, St Mary
Sophia Ford age 40, abode Eye UH, buried 4 Mar 1879 Mendlsham St Mary.
No burial of a younger William SCARFE between 1851-1861
However I suspect from FreeBMD that there were 2 William SCARFEs born in 1862
William SCARFE registered MarQ 1862 4a/489 Hartismere, which is likely to be the one in Mendlesham.
William SCARFE SepQ 1862 Samford Reg Dist 4a/527 which is likely to be the one you are looking for.

William is consistent in his place of birth in all censuses from 1881 to 1911! ::)
I wonder if he was born illegitimately?
And therefore had a different surname in 1871?
But then again, the birth registration is under Scarfe! :-\

Thanks very much for the latest 1871 census but I have a couple of concerns ;-
1. Mary seems too old to have those children ?
2. Could she be a 2nd wife
3. Surname spelling
4. John is a carpenter as was William in later life

Some would argue that she was not too old :) The last child (William) on the CR could easily have been born when she was 50/51. Mary Ann could easily have been his second wife or perhaps he started late.
I think KGarrard has found the right family for you - spelling is just a matter of how they said their name to the enumerator & how he interpreted what they said.
A copy of William's birth cert will give you all the info you need inc mothers maiden name but there are 2 potential marriages on FreeBMD that might fit the bill.
John SCARF & Mary Ann REED MarQ 1857 Sudbury Ref 4a/509. Sudbury RD covers the villages just west of E Bergholt.
John SCARFE & on the same page Mary Ann GURLING Cosford RD Dec 1850 12/667. Cosford RD is more NW of E Bergholt.
3rd option is he could have nipped across the river into Essex & married there - Bradfield is not far across stream from E Bergholt
The John SCARFE death reg you have found in the Samford RD is likely this one
John SCARFE age 76 buried 25 May 1879 Chelmondiston, St Andrew (Suffolk Burial Index).
I found a Mary Ann SCARFE buried 18 Jul 1900 East Bergholt age given as 78. If it is the same Mary Ann then she could have been younger than the 1871CR suggests or her age at death was a guesstimate. Samford RD SepQ 1900 4a/653. No sign of husband John buried at E Bergholt up to 1900 on SBI

What is John SCARFE c1805 marital status in 1861? No obvious marriages of a John Scarf etc on the Suffolk Marriage Index 1813-37

I have found a John Scarfe via Genes Reunited death June Q 1879,Samford Birth 1803. As for a marriage its showing one for 1820 and one for 1825 both just quoting Suffolk though. There seems to be quite a lot of them overall !

The 1879 death you have found on GR is probably the Chelmondiston one as per my earlier post.
As for the marriages you are quoting the 1825 marriage is probably also relates to Chelmondiston. John SCARF to Mary Brown 17 Apr 1825 Chelmondiston. The 1820 one could be John SCARFE to Sarah ELLIS 5 Feb 1820 Old Newton (Suffolk marriage Index). There are quite a few John Scarf marriages listed between 1813-37 just none to a Mary Ann that would fit your chap but as she was from Essex it is quite feasible that they married there. The only way to clarify the situation is to get a copy of the birth cert for William from the GRO.
Put little store on family trees you see on line many are wildly wrong. People seem to forget there was no such thing as computers in the 1800s & now not all the records have been transcribed and are available online certainly not in Suffolk. Part of your problem seems to be that the LDS (familysearch.org) has not been able to transcribe the East Bergholt PRs thats why you are struggling to find the info you need online.
Try & find John SCARFE c1805 on the 1851CR - what was his marital status. If he had a wife who?
The Suffolk Family History Society does sell CDs for baptisms in the Samford area 1754-1900 it includes East bergholt. Check out their website for info http://www.suffolkfhs.co.uk/osc/index.php?cPath=31_35
