HI all,
I am looking for information on William Henry Bant Clapp. He was born in Ireland in 1840. He lived in Cork in 1862 when he registered as a doctor in the UK Medical Register. Between 1863 & 1867 he joined the army as a Staff Assistant Surgeon. He married Rebecca Matilda Penman in Surrey, England in 1869. He spent a lot of time in India where quite a few of his children were born. HIs eldest son William Henry John Clapp is my great great grandfather.
Thanks in advance!
Kristy

Do you have a marriage cert for William and Rebecca ?
It should show the names and occupations of their father's, which might help your search.
William was born well before the start of civil records in Ireland, so to start a search you would usually need a location (ideally the name of the town, townland or parish his family lived), and also his denomination.

Thanks for those links. This is the only thing I can find like a marriage certificate:

I think that relates to Banns or License for the marriage. A likely reference to the marriage is on FreeBMD, which means you can order a civil cert from GRO UK
Record Type : Marriages
Quarter/Year : Sep 1869
Registration District : Strand (London / Middlesex)
Volume : 1b / Page 833
William Benjamin Borer
William Henry B Clapp
Rebecca Matilda Penman
Laura Jane Wigley

There's a possible relation of your William listed in Slater's directory of 1846 - a Captain William Clapp, 2 Audley place, Cork (city)
see : http://www.failteromhat.com/slater/0049.pdf
The marriage cert would probably help confirm, or rule this out as a possible father to your William. Looks like another military man...
p.s. Audley place was near to Victoria Barracks.

From an unusual source - DNW auctioneers - giving information relating to the sale in 2006 of a Military General Service Medal 1793 - 1814 belonging to W.H.Clapp. In a footnote it mentions that he was stationed in Cork from 1835 as a Deputy Purveyor and that his son William Henry Bant Clapp was born in December 1839 in Douglas, Cork. - http://tinyurl.com/njnjghb
From Ballincollig Heritage in Co. Cork -an index of headstones from Cork Military Cemetery at Assumption Hill lists W.H Clapp - http://tinyurl.com/qdn257k
Also from Ballincollig Heritage a reply to a query from a descendant of W.H Clapp gives the information that W.H Clapp died Mar 18th 1869 aged 83 and his wife Jane died July 3rd 1861 aged 53. - http://ballincollig.wordpress.com/military-barracks/

Hi kristyo
Don't forget to check out your local library as many of them subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition, and apart from family trees, all the datasets are there. Libraries usually offer 1-2 hours free access at a time.
The entry you found online is for the probate calendar, not the actual will. If you are in Australia (it's only a guess as you haven't updated your profile yet) you might have a problem obtaining a copy as the Probate Registry only accepts cheques drawn in sterling or cash at the counter in Holborn, London. As he left a sum of money, it might be worth you trying to get a copy if you can think of a work around.
Here's the corresponding entry in the death index
Deaths Mar 1922
Clapp, William H B, aged 81, Birkenhead 8a 885

Thanks again everyone,
Ive found that William Henry Bant Clapp had at least 1 sister, Alexandrina Stewart Clapp born 1840 in Douglas, Cork , and 1 brother Albert John Clapp, born 1841 in Douglas, Cork, and died 1877 in Kashmir. His father was William Henry Clapp and mother is possibly Jane? Im not sure what religion they were but my father seemed to think that his great grandfather (WHB Clapps son) was an Orangeman.
Thanks so much for all your help I don't think I could have gotten this far without it!
-
Have you seen Alexandrina in the 1901 census? Here is the link : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Queenstown_Urban/West_Beach/1139488/
Knocked a few years off her age! The only other 2 Clapps living in Ireland in 1901 were born in England, although one was called William Henry (an Ordnance Surveyor). http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Waterford/Waterford_Urban_No__5/Newrath_Road/1763441/
This William Henry turns up in Armagh (married to an Alice Kate Hepenstall) and also in Cavan - must have been caught on 2 census nights.
Alexandrina's religion is Church of Ireland (Anglican / Episcopalian) as are the other Clapps living in Ireland in 1911.
-
Sorry, meant to say that William Henry turns up in Armagh and Cavan in the 1911 census.

WHB Clapp served in Egypt with No7 Field Hospital as a Surgeon Major, receiving a no clasp 1882 Egypt Medal and Khedive's Star.
