Title: William Wellings and Alice Bagley - Shrewsbury / Stanton
Post by: DonnaMarie1982 on Tuesday 18 June 13 20:12 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm struggling to find records on the parentage of the individuals above and any guidance would be great.

I believe the pair were married in 1844 in Wellington Spa.

Their Son Alfred was born in 1853.

They appear in the 1851 census in Ellerdine. From this it seems that William was born 1784 and is 64 a farmer of 9 acres plus watchmaker and Alice his young wife of 24? making her born in 1827.

In 1861 Alice appears as a clockmakers widow. William dies possibly 1860 and Alice remarries a Thomas Pritchard in 1861.

Any help would be great.

Many thanks

Donna

Thanks very much guys!

Maurice, I believe it is the bottom William on your lists of baptism's (I just relented and paid to join ancestry for a month on top of the other sites I'm using)

Thank you so much for the guidance!

The marriage reference is December qtr 1844, Wellington (Shropshire), vol 18, page 269.

A copy of the marriage certificate would establish William's father's name. (Unless he was Ann Welling's son - see above)

It seems William was possibly married before - maybe names of children from that marriage could help to find parentage?

Oak Gate Ellerdine Heath Salop
William Wellings 55 Clock maker
Ann 50
Mary 15

Just looked at 1851 image and William gives p.o.b. as Shawbury -not Shrewsbury???

So It looks like the baptism in Shawbury could be correct

Hi Suz,

Looking at some notes on another online tree, he appears to have married 3 times.

ann
1791

mary
1826

Alice
1844

At first I was a bit concerned at him being Alfreds farther at the age of 74, but with him having such a young wife in Alice I guess that's actually entirely possible. There's actually a really nice portrait of him on the site as well.

I'll look into the above and see if it follows through.

You  might be interested to know that my ancestors were Chetwoods/Chatwoods of Ellerdine Heath, neighbours of the Wellings', and descendants of a lateral ancestor (now in USA) have a William Wellings watch (not working these days) that was a parting gift for the Chetwood family who emigrated in 1849!

Further to above post, the watch was made at Oakgate (now a plant nursery) at Ellerdine Heath,

If you could send me a picture of that one day Sue I would be ever so grateful. (*)
