Title: Henry Ellis Hyde
Post by: pamela-anne on Tuesday 18 June 13 05:22 BST (UK)
I am still researching my Hyde family.
Can anyone help me  with Henry Ellis Hyde born 01.01.1812 married Sarah Rowe 1845.
His father was John Hyde born abt. January 1785 - but this is all the info I have. Who was
Henry's mother and any details.
I do not have access to the Census etc. and would really appreciate as much info as possible on our family.  I am slowly building up the Family Tree.
Many thanks

Hi Pamela-anne

As you probably already know, Henry Ellis Hyde (a bachelor of full age) was a painter, of 98 Shoe Lane in Cripplegate, when he married Sarah Rowe on 10 August 1845 at St Giles Cripplegate.

His father was named as John Hyde, accountant.

What is the source of your information as to the birthdates of Henry and his father John?

What do you know of the later life of Henry & Sarah? E.g. presumably they had a child who is your ancestor (if so who, where, when)? Did they emigrate or did they stay in England?

Picking up on Henry's occupation as a painter - is this the family? If so, Henry is consistent about saying he was born in Liverpool.

1851: At 2 George Court, Marylebone, Henry HIDE (39, painter b Liverpool) & Sarah (34 b Middx St Brides) with children Henry W (6), Eliza J (3) and Alfred (1), all born St Brides. HO107/1488/457/24.

1861: At 2 Hethersett Court, Marylebone (again as HIDE) - now with an additional child Edward (8 b St Pancras). RG9/122/55/42. Henry is a painter, writer & grainer, 48 b Liverpool.

1871: At 19 Augustus St, St Pancras (HYDE) with daughter Eliza & son Edward. RG10/204/63/26. Henry is a house painter, 58 b Liverpool.

1881: Sarah HYDE (64 b London) is a widowed laundress at 14 Rhyl St, St Pancras with daughter Eliza (laundress) and son Edward (bank clerk). RG11/215/125/7. (Oddly her husband Henry's death doesn't seem to be registered until Dec qtr 1881 if I've found the right one).

If that is the right family then this baptism looks interesting, given the occupation of the father John (described as an accountant on Henry's marriage record).

Baptism, St Thomas, Liverpool

26 July 1812

Henry (born June 19th 1811), son of John Hyde, book keeper, and Sarah (late Palin), his wife.

That doesn't really get us any further, I'm afraid, without understanding what sources your family member has relied upon.  There are some questionable-looking family trees online, some of which which appear to merge the families of more than one Henry Hyde living in Marylebone at about the same time, and others of which ascribe the Hyde/Rowe marriage to a couple who look likely to have married much earlier. We don't know whether your family member has relied on one of those.

You'll do much better to research carefully step-by-step yourself so that you can confidently rely upon your own research.  Rootschatters will be very willing to help you do this.  We do need the basic information to start with though - so I will ask this question again:

Hi Pamela-anne

Hi there
None of my business but looking at previous posts she is descended from Henry William Hyde born 1844 and his wife Rosina so the censuses you found would fit.
And I really think you have the correct baptism as well.

I see - well, Henry William Hyde's occupation is Grainer (son of Henry Hyde, Grainer) when he marries Rosina Fritz in 1867.

He carries on thereafter (variously) as a painter, grainer, house decorator. So it does look very much as though he's a son of the Liverpool-born Henry who did the same sort of work; that fits with the early census findings too.

Obviously Henry William's 1844 birth puts him ahead of the 1845 Hyde/Rowe marriage, but since he was registered as Hyde there's no reason to think Henry was not his father.
