Hi.
I've found the death of this poor little chap in Sydney NSW in 1868, he died aged 14 months and was buried in Balmain Cemetery. His mother's name was Jane, no father's name given. This is the first positive evidence I have for people with my surname in Australia in the 19th century. I think my great great grandfather John Steadwood may have been born in Boston, SA but I just don't know. So, could someone have a look for the birth of William and whether there is any more information on either him or his mother.
Many thanks

It is an unusual name - didn't seem so unusual at first glance. Not finding very much at all. :(
I wonder if it could have come (particularly with the south australian connection) from the german - say stattholz (after a quick google) or similar - the anglicised version of a german name.
cheers,
Ros
(Neil may be along with advice on German names)
adding : No it seems to be Scottish
Now I see your (?) other queries regarding the John Steadwood in 1881 census in Yorkshire with place of birth hard to decipher ... (transcribed as Boston St Kate's) http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Soc/soc.genealogy.britain/2009-10/msg00092.html

Umm STEADWOOD. ??? STEADMAN yes ;D My neice is married to a Steadman. STADE and STEHN are German.
Tried a few searches SA can't see anything positive.
I actually think the name is a corruption of another either by transcription error or bad literacy?

Well found from me as well ;D They seem to be an anomaly as well as they are the only ones on BDM's along with three infant deaths to possibly the same couple in the 1840's. ???

You guys are incredible! It is an unusual name, generally spelt wrong on first acquaintance and often mis written as Stedman or Steadman even after I've spelt it out. I find the reference to John Stedward intriguing because I know that there were members of my family in Glasgow in the Springburn area at about that time - there is no Springham area but again an easy mistake to make. As to the others - who knows? Certainly worth my investigating further, getting certificates etc because I think that's the only way that I'll figure out if (for example) Jane Stedward is the same person as Jane Steadwood!! Wow, just, wow!!

This gives a little more on WILLIAM ALEXANDER in NZ
It also uses the correct spelling of the father's address and district, unlike the newspaper link given previously. Springburn

Edit----- correction to man's name :(

Again, thank you all. Hard to say if any of these are any of my family - but worth filing away in the "don't know yet" file!! I'll be doing some investigation on these, that's for sure :)
