Title: Samuel Wright & Hannah Bell
Post by: janetandandy on Sunday 16 June 13 12:26 BST (UK)
I have just downloaded an ancestors scottish birth certificate it states that his parents are Samuel Wright 35 (so born around 1820) born Co of Armagh and Hannah Wright nee Bell also 35 born Co of Fermanagh.  It also says they were married 1834 Belfast.
I am new to Irish research....can anyone advise me how to progress...i.e Samuel & Hannah wedding records? or their birth records?

Kind regards
Janet

Hi,
Civil registration of marriages did not start in Ireland until 1845 and births from 1864. To get any information you will have to find the churches where they were baptised and married.

Regards

Not sure about the dates here- born c1820 but married 1834?

Can you find birth certificates for any other children born in Scotland? (there may be more/different details)

Definitely work through everything you can in the Scottish records first. If Samuel and Hannah had children in Scotland then they probably died in Scotland too? Scottish death records are very good and you might get a mother's maiden name from one of those which is more than you could hope to get from most Irish sources even if they exist and you can find them.

If they moved to Scotland in the 1830s-1850s then there would be a very strong chance that they had siblings or other close relatives also move to Scotland. The scale of emigration at that time is staggering.

Carefully look at anybody living at the same address on a census record or at marriage witnesses, etc. The more relatives you can find from Ireland, the better chance you have of figuring out where they came from. You got really lucky even getting the counties on that record! I haven't seen that on any of my Scottish civil registrations.

Many thanks for the advice....I have looked at 1851 & 1861 census (Eghadowey is right) their ages are 36 & 46 so born around 1815.  I have also found that their neice was in a poor house in Glasgow so I will apply for a copy of the poor relief record....may have some info on there.
