Title: Visiting Durham
Post by: FamilyTreeNat on Saturday 15 June 13 16:50 BST (UK)
I am going up to the North East for a few days next month to do a little research on my ancestors from the North East.

Can anyone recommend any good places to visit? So far on my list I have:

The Beamish Museum

The Durham Light Infantry Museum

The Northumberland & Durham Family History Society Research Centre

Tyne & Wear Archives

Thanks for your help!

Tyne & Wear Archives

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

If you are going to go to T & W Archives and want to look at records on microfilm then please do call in advance and book a reader. It can get quite busy at times - I've been there sometimes when people have arrived without booking a reader and gone away disappointed.

If you are going next month the Durham Miners Gala is on the 2nd Saturday in July, you may want to avoid this, on the other hand if you have never seen it you may like to, it lasts all day and gets very busy but it is brilliant.
Regards.
Peter.

The Lindisfarne Gospels are on show in Durham from 1 July until 30 September.  This will be a great opportunity to see the actual manuscripts as well as learning about St Cuthbert.  You need to book a ticket to visit. There is a website giving all the details

Thanks for the tip JenB. I will make sure I book a reader!

I will miss the gala as I'm going a few days later, but thanks Peterjay  :)

The St Cuthbert's thing looks interesting, thanks ChrissieL.

If you go to DLI museum Durham County Records office is right next to it, but as said before book a reader as it can be busy and it is only open Mon Tue and Wed.
The staff at both venues are really helpful so don`t be afraid to ask questions
Have a great visit!

I forgot to add that T & W Archives are closed on Mondays.
You will need a CARN ticket, but should be able to get this when you arrive - check when you call to book the reader.

And your not going to the Durham University Library ??? :o

I am researching my Durham family and it has proved an invaluable resource for someone so far away in Australia. 8)
