Title: Julia Doyle 1836/7-1869
Post by: kristyo on Friday 14 June 13 10:32 BST (UK)
Hi everyone... hoping someone out there can help me.

I'm trying to research JULIA DOYLE. Born 1836-37 in Ireland. She came to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1858 on the Emma Eugenia. She is listed on the passenger list as a servant and i think the county that has been put down is Middlesex. The copy on the ancestry.com.au site of the passenger list is not great and I cant see if she had any other family on the ship. She married in 1861 to Henry Albert in Perth, WA and listed her father as James Doyle, occupation Printer, on the marriage certificate. She had 5 children and died in August 1869.

Hoping someone else has some info on her!

Thanks

Kristy

Hi Kristy,

I have done some checking around on some trees for Julia and most have that she arrived in 1852.
I found this passenger list for a Julia Doyle with her family. Born in Ireland. See what you think.
Arrive on the Argyle19 Jul 1852

http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.asp?Page=NRS5316/4_4790/Argyle_19%20Jul%201852/4_479000215.jpg&No=2

I'll do some more checking and see if the family on the passenger list can be connected to your Julia.

HI Giblet,

Thanks for that! The Julia Doyle that arrived in 1852 is a different Julia. We originally thought this was her but a distant cousin who is also researching has found that they are not the same Julia! A lot of the trees on ancestry.com.au have her down as the same Julia which is where I think I went wrong! I have tried to contact the other lady researching but haven't heard back from her yet to see what else she has found out which is why I thought I would have a go on here!

Thanks so much

Kristy

Hi,
Im confused as to why she was born in Ireland and the passenger list has county as Middlesex ???

Do you have a copy of her marriage cert? If so can you post what information is on it please.
Such as place of birth and witnesses etc. etc.

Thanks Kristy.

I cant see it been Middlesex. I think we need someone to decipher it for us.

kristyo,
I wonder if the deciphering might be helped if you could attach another snip or two which will give an idea of the way the writer formed his letters in the words we can actually decipher.

Just a thought anyway.

Then the Irish board chatters might be able to help, being more familiar with the regions, if no-one here can.

Here is another 'Middlesex' in the same column.  Bearing in mind that the column heading is 'From what County selected', not 'native place'.

Yes it does now that i have seen the other attachment Debra posted.
Thanks for the column headings Debra. That makes more sense to me know. I had been thinking it would have been native place.

Hi there,

I am also trying to find Julia Doyle b1839 in Middlesex to James Doyle and Mary Ann Burns - they were both born in Ireland and moved to London. He is a stationer on the 1841 census. Not sure if that is a printer?

She was in a workhouse in Norwood in 1851 census, then she was moved to the St Martin's workhouse (Castle Street) in 1857.  Ancestry.co.uk have some of the workhouse records. She was on the Emma Eugenia in 1858. I got this information from a Vivienne Garforth who posted the information online, and have found the same girls all went on the ship together.

I have lost Julia after she was on the ship. I have been curious about the marriage as it seems to be the right time frame after her arrival.

I am descended from her brother - Daniel Doyle. There was another sister Mary, but I cannot find records of a Mary Doyle in London, too many! Her father was James Doyle and he was listed as deceased on Daniel's marriage certificate in 1853. Julia was listed as destitute on the workhouse records, so I am wondering if her parents both died. I am surprised that Daniel never took her in though. I am curious about the names of her children!

Are we talking about the same Julia?

Many thanks
Nicola

Oh wow I think we might be. Just googled stationer and an old definition of stationer was publisher. How exciting!! On the passenger list of arrivals into WA she was listed with all other female domestic servants so I figured she must have travelled without family.

Thanks Nicola!!

Wow! I have finally tracked her down it seems! I have managed to find some of the information on her children on familysearch.org.

Let me know if you need any information relating to English records.

I have the following:
Her father was James Doyle (b1806 Ireland), mother Mary Ann Doyle nee Burns (born 1816 Ireland) Julia was born 22nd June 1839 in Middlesex - I have her birth certificate.

From the 1841 census she is with her mother and father and brother Daniel and sister Mary, living at Number 6 off alley west. James is a stationer.

From the 1851 census she is in Croydon in a workhouse.

Thanks
Nicola
