Title: Can anyone help me decipher the groom's father's middle name?
Post by: gemmaallen1977 on Thursday 13 June 13 20:18 BST (UK)
Hi

I really need some help please in deciphering the groom's father's middle name to help me trace the groom and his parents.  It is James (illegible) Collins.  I have already contacted the LMA who hold the Parish Registers and they have informed me that their entry has no name for the father just the word "Deceased".  The marriage took place in December 1923, in Woolwich, London.  All help would be much appreciated, many thanks.  Gemma.

Could it be Huyswell? The first letter is unusually formed, is there anything with which we can compare ? best of luck >Viktoria.

Hello -

I would read it as 'Kingswell'.

Thank you - the only thing I have is the marriage certificate and it is attached to the previous post that Alexander mentioned, I was recently advised to post just the relevant section of the certificate.  The general consensus before was Kingswell or Fursewell/Furzewell but I still haven't been able to find a match so far.  I've tried contacting the Registry Office where the marriage took place without any luck there either.

Thanks for all your help, Gemma.

I think it is Kingswell. As he is a deceased RN stoker, I looked at the CWGC site, but no mention there. Have you tried to find a newspaper announcement of the marriage? That might give the parents' names.

Hi there. In my family there have been a couple of odd middle names but with some digging I have found a reason for their origin. The most obscure was one that turned out to be the surname of the fathers best man at his wedding.
What else do you know about the family. Just looking at the handwriting will probably not be the solution without other evidence.
Have you nailed the family going back. Its quite a common name. Did you find them on the 1911? Who was the mother? Where were they from. When and where was the father born etc.
The more info will be of help to rootschatters in my experience they are fantastic at digging up info.
