Hi all!
I have reading this site for a few months now and I think it is wonderful the amount of help that goes into assisting others with their queries. But now I must ask for your help.
My Gran and I are doing her father's family tree and we were doing quite well up to the last month were we seem to have hit a wall. Several times.
I am trying to find more information on William Calder. As a former Provost I thought there would be a biography somewhere on him, but I do not seem to be having much luck.
What I do know was that he was Provost of Edinburgh in 1810-11.
Married to Agnes Dalrymple (who has a portrait in the City of Edinburgh Council collection - Agnes Calder, née Dalrymple, Wife to William Calder, Lord Provost of Edinburgh (1810–1811) - another query if anybody could help with that as well).
According to research so far his brothers were Joseph of Green(e) County, New York and Alexander of Drumcross.
He had numerous children, Ann (b. 1786, d. 1874). Isabella (b.1788), Jean (b.1790), Helen (b. 1792), Eliza (b. 1793), and Mary (b. 1796).
My direct line is actually through his brother Alexander of Drumcross (who married Janet Willis of Norfolk) but I cannot find any mention of him, hence pursuing what I would have thought to be his more notable brother.
What I would like to find out are the birthdates and death dates of all three brothers, William, Alexander, and Joseph. And the names Joseph's wife - I have Alexander listed underneath him so I presume he was married and they had a boy.
And finally for the moment, the names, birth and death dates for their parents and possible grandparents.
Any advice on how to keep researching further back will be welcomed as well. I think I am reaching the point beyond census assistance.
Again thankyou very much for reading and sincerely hope someone could point me in the right direction.

Hi HereandThere,
Welcome to RootsChat, good luck with your research. Have you tried searching on the Latter Day Saints (LDS) site, https://familysearch.org/search
This may take you back further and it is free. I will do a search on the Lord Provost William Calder, and report back if I find anything.

Hi HereandThere,
I have found articles in the Scotsman that Lord Provost William Calder laid the foundation stone of St George's Church in 1811, it was built on west side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh and was completed in 1814.

Hi, there,
Welcome to Rootschat. There isn't much free information on line for the Scottish family
as they don't come under the same census as in England.
May I suggest you join Scotlands People who have most of the records. It costs £7 for
30 credits and it costs normally 1 credit for a name on the list you want. It also has marriage certificates for an extra 5 credits. Plus death certificates.
You could try putting this post on the Scottish part of Rootschat as this post is on the
general one.
I did find something for you.
William Calder married Agnes Dalrymple on 1st September 1785 at St Cuthberts
Edinburgh.
William was classed as a Grocer in Leith and Agnes was a resident of Portsburgh.
Agnes was the daughter of the late Robert Dalrymple a Brewer. Wonder if that
was the same Dalrymple of the brewing of Whiskey????
You would have to check the following information as I cannot prove it is
your Alexander.
Alexander Calder born 30th June 1754 at Bathgate, Drumcross, West Lothian
parents were
Alexander and Jean Pinkerton.

William died 19 Sep 1824 in Edinburgh, no age given.
He had a daughter Ann who married William Marshall, a jeweller and goldsmith to the King in the early 19th century, on 5 March 1811.
There is some more on the Calder family here http://www.rootschat.com/links/0umn/ under David Marshall's biography.
I've checked the Scotlands People website and his might be the 29 page (!) testament ref SC70/1/32 confirmed in February 1825. You can download it for 10 credits (30 credits cost £7, so that's a bargain, I think ;) )

Thank you for helping!
And this is obviously where it gets interesting... Thanks Nell- I have found the reference to William from that book and this is where it gets confusing as it contradicts the information Sandymc found. According to this book, William and Agnes were married in 1774, and Agnes' father was Hugh Dalrymple. However, their eldest Ann wasn't born until a year after the marriage date given by Sandymc and the St Cuthbert church is where all the children were baptized, so there is a possibility. I will look into both of these and see where they go. Again, thanks to you both.
And thanks Tom, I used that website and was able to find more specific information on William's children. Not so lucky with Alexander's side unfortunately but I will keep digging.
Regards,
Anna
