Does anyone know if Jabez may have been translated as James on any census or marriage certificates
-
Translation from the spoken word to the written word can result in just about anything, as far as I have seen.
Maybe if you gave us a bit more detail we could help?

on my grandfathers marriage certificate it says his fathers name is John James Phillipson (coal mine overseer). But as much as I try I cannot find a John James with a son William who was born in 1900. The only one I can find is a John Jabez with a son William born in1902. My grandfathers marriage took place in Sunderland. For the past 4 years I have been looking at the wrong family so now I am having to start all over again.

John Jabez Philipson was baptized in Sacriston 22 Aug 1867. Parents are given as Joseph Philipson and Sarah. He seems to be with grandparents in 1871 and an uncle in 1881 and 1891. His first wife was Elizabeth Herdman (marriage Jan q 1898 Gateshead). Assuming it is the correct man he is in Leadgate, Northumberland in 1901 with Elizabeth and a son Robert. I wonder if the 1911 census entry for William Philipson son of John Jabez should say Leadgate, Northumberland. There is a birth for a William Philipson in the Hexham district Apr-Jun 1901.
Good luck with your search.
William
