My grandfather was born in 1892 in Ontario Canada. The only information from his early years is that in the 1901 Canada census, he was living with his grandparents James and Elizabeth Fleming in Bothwell, Zone, Canada. I can't find anywhere who is parents are. I am assuming that one of the daughters of James and Elizabeth had him out of wedlock? Can anyone help?

Hi Nanny Jan...........I don't think that's my Ernest Fleming. His birth date is April 23, 1892. His death certificate has father is James Fleming and mother is Elsie Graig. This could have been fudged as a lot of his papers over the years changed, but I'm sure of the birthdate. Thx, Trish

I went to
http://automatedgenealogy.com
to check the 1901 and 1911 census
1901/Ontario/Bothwell/Bothwell Town
Household 53
Flemming, James, head, b. Jun 18, 1832, age 69, bootmaker
Elizabeth, wife, b. Jun 1, 1841, age 59
Louise J, daughter, b.Jan 4, 1871, age 30
Frank, son, b. Sep 19, 1880, age 20
Ernest, grandson, s. Apr 23, 1892, age 9
1911/Ontario/Kent East/Bothwell
Fleming, Frank b. Sept 1879
elizabeth, mother, widow, b. June 1841
Mary, sister, b. 1860
decided to go backwards and checked the census at Library and Archives Canada
1891/Ontario/Bothwell, Bothwell Town
Flemming, James, age 54
Elizabeth, age 46
Eddie, son, age 21
Minnie, daughter, age 17 (this could be Louise Jane)
Frank, son, age 11
1881/Ontario/Bothwell/
Flemming, James, age 46
Elizabeth, age 37
Robert, age 19
Edward, age 9
Louise Jane, age 6
Frank H., age 2
1871, Ontario, Bothwell Town, Bothwell 003
Fleming, Jams, age 29
Elizabeth, age 26
Margaret, age 3
Mary, age 3 months
This is as far back as I can access the census. If you look at the children and then try to track them all through the various census, the most likely parent for Ernest would be sons Robert or Edward or daughter Louise Jane. At least this gives you names to work with.

They may be able to give you the dates of death for members of the family and in that way eliminate possible parent for Ernest.

Louise Jane Fleming, b. 1871
m. George E. Hall, 8 April 1901

I can't find any trace of George and Louise after the marriage in 1901. She also isn't buried with the others in Bothwell Cemetery. Just a gut feeling but this is the one I think I would try to research and find.
I checked for a birth for Ernest at family search and I couldn't find anything.

Hi,
Looking thru this yesterday, agree with Val that Louise seemed the prime candidate. Louise and George were in Richmond Avenue, Wichita Ward 5, Sedgwick, Kansas 1910 with 3 children.
George C Hall 45 Born Canada. Marriage 2 for 9 years. Shoe-Maker. Shoe Shop
Louise J Hall 39 Born Canada. Had 4 children and 3 survive. Marriage 1 for 9 years.
Florence Hall 8 Born Canada.
Edgar Hall 4 Born Michigan.
Jimmie Hall 2 Born Kansas
Noticed a family tree entry that says :- Louisa Jane Flemming - Born 1871 in Ontario, Canada and Died May 1914 in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas.

Don't think Margaret Flemming and George Trott would be the parents.
Margaret 1859 - 1907 and George 1859 - 1927. Son Kencil Trott (Albert on the 1901 census)1894 - 1915
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~clifford/KentCounty/ZoneTwshp/Bothwell%20Cemetery%20068.jpg
The informant on the death of Mary Burnham (Jan 2 nd 1929) was her nephew W J Trott so suspect no children.
Mary Fleming Burnham is buried in West Bothwell Cemetery. Looks as if Daniel Burnham AKA Ernest Clayton Burnham was married to Ada Elizabeth Attridge in 1901.

Thank you for the information. I do have all of these names, but no one of the children has any documentation to a relationship with Ernest. I can't find a birth certificate on file for him, so I'm wondering if he might have been a child they took in and raised and just gave him their last name. I'm not sure if that might have been done back then.
-
It is entirely possible that his birth was not registered. Depending on the religion, you may find a baptism but would have to know the church. I still think the most likely candidate for parent would be Louise. Ernest stated on a border crossing that he had been in the US from 1902 to June 1910. 1902 would have been around the time that Louise and George went to the US.
-
Thank you, I agree. I think Louise probably was his mother. She ended up going to Kansas and George left her and the children. She died in 1914 and the children were abandoned.

Hi Trish!
I am a great grandmother Louisa Jane Fleming (Hall). Her mother and father were James & Elizabeth Fleming. Louisa Jane and George E. Hall, were married in Detroit, MI in 1901. They had 5 children, Florence, Edgar (aka William), James, Roy and Eliza. I know if Ernest, but have never figured out who his parents are or were. I am suspecting that Mary was his mother and was raised by his grandparents. You are welcome to contact me, as I would love know more about my grandmother and her parents. Little is known due to George disappearing and Louisa passing away in 1914.
Oh, William was my grandfather and we never did find his father. He was only 12 when his mother passed.

Hi Sandy,
I guess I haven't been on this site in a very long while, as I just saw your response.
I have no new information on the Fleming/Hall family, other than what I have in my family tree.
Are you on Ancestry? I can make my tree sharable to you.
Thanks,
Trish
