Title: Looking for the family and birthplace of Susannah Powell
Post by: Angelathomas on Tuesday 11 June 13 20:12 BST (UK)
Susannah Powell according to the 1841 and 1851 censuses was born either in1786 or 1783. In the 1851 census her birthplace is listed as Chastock, Montgomeryshire by Ancestry but the original image is not very clear and so is difficult to verify. At the time of these censuses, she was living in Howick, Northumberland. Her marriage to James Murray took place in Howick in 1809. By 1841 she was a widow with nine children, Susannah, John, Mary Ann, Jane, Elizabeth, James Powell, Isabella, Charlotte and Maria. Susannah's son James worked as a cabinet maker at Howick Hall, home of Earl Grey, and met his wife there. I wonder if the same was true of Susannah and her husband. If Susannah was a servant at Howick Hall, why had she travelled so far from home? I haven't been able to find any of her Welsh relatives in Northumberland so she seems to have moved alone. I haven't been able to locate her birthplace. Someone has already suggested that it could have been Churchstoke. I would appreciate any help with this.

What an awful image isnt it? (1851)

I am not convinced it says Montgomeryshire at all, and it doesnt mention Wales!

What do you think it says? The pattern is to write the county and then the place and I know from the 1841 census that she wasn't born in Northumberland.

Does anyone know if Howick Hall archives are available to the public?

The original of the 1851 Census is very difficult to read, but interestingly both Ancestry and Findmypast have the same transcription for her place of birth.

I'm not certain what it says either.

If you look at the National Gazetteer of Wales for places in Montgomeryshire that begin with CH then Churchstoke is certainly the most likely.  http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geogdata/ngw/c.htm

Hi, even if I assume its churchstoke I'm finding it hard to find a Susannah powell, 1780-1790
the best I can see is a possible parents marriage in 1782 in churchstoke  (George powel and mary)
and a remote baptism fo a susanna  (no H) in 1785 on familysearch, shown as llandysul Montgomery, but must be llandyssill, this is about 3 miles from churchstoke.

added, I did say on your other post I'm not good at searching  :) :)

If the reference is 2419  706  3 this is Susannah Murray on FindMyPast.

all the land around churchstoke was in the ownership of the earl of powis, lord clive, his daughter married the earl of Northumberland from alnwich castle, quite near to his neighbour earl grey at howick.
she was much the same age as Susannah powell

Thank you so much everyone. it was a bit like the elves and the shoemaker. I go to bed and wake up to find lots of work has been done! I did find the birth of Susanna Powell in Llandysul on Familysearch Mazi but I could only find the place in Breconshire. the bit about the Earl of Powys was very interesting and worth following up. I've just found the banns of John Powell and Susanna Thomas in 1781 at Forden Montgomeryshire so I'm going to pursue that. thanks again for your help.

familysearch are offering" Montgomeryshire parish records" as a source of some entries, churchstoke originals are held at Shropshire archives, it might be worth a tedious search of the batch numbers, or the archer/hugh wallis sites to see if churchstoke is included in Montgomery,
 : a task beyond me, I'm afraid.  :)

good luck

Church Stoke baptisms - Family Search - Montgomeryshire - batch No C157841 - 1828 only

Findmypast which have a lot of Welsh parish records do not have any for Church Stoke, Montgomeryshire.

 :( :( :( :( so we have been looking in the wrong haystack for a needle that wasn't there  :) :) :) :) :)

I have tried Powys archives, Shropshire archives, and Montgomeryshire genealogical society and it seems to me a trip to Shropshire archives to look at the microfiche may be the only answer

Interestingly the Montgomery society have a fair later this month
guess where --------------- Churchstoke  ::) ::) ::)

One more thing. I was struck when I started this research by the fact that Susannah had a daughter called Charlotte. My ancestors are usually from the lower social orders, miners, tradesmen or agricultural labourers. Charlotte is not a name I have come across in my family. however the Duchess of Northumberland that you mentioned Mazi was called Charlotte!
