I have been able to confirm, by Scotlands People, IGI etc, the following:
- Janet Bunyan Nicol was born Carnwath, Lanarkshire 20/2/1822 to parents Andrew Nicol and Janet Bunyan
- Janet Bunyan Nicol married Alexander Laurie at Pettinain, Lanarkshire 1/6/1841
What I have been unable to verify is:
- when/where Nicol and Bunyan were married
- who are the parents of Andrew Nicol. Some 'trees' suggest that it may be Walter Nicol (1747-1846) and Isobel Reid (1751-1828), both of Langholm.
Would appreciate any assistance to determine one way or the other.
Thanks, Bill.

Thank you annep5892. That took you 14 minutes; wonder what I was doing all day!
Bill.
(Does it look like Andrew & Janet may not have been married?)
-
Bill,
Did you notice Janet's last name as it was entered on Family Search as per the births of her children?
They all say Bunyie rather than Bunyan.
However, I also noted that the 1st recorded child was baptised in CARSTAIRS in 1818.
The child was called Margaret but most probably died in infancy as this couple had a child called Margaret Williamson Nicol at a later date in Carnwath.
Link to all Nicol/Bunyie baptisms

Based on this 1st birth, I looked for a marrige prior to 1818.....
Andrew Nicol and Janet BUNGIE married in Edinburgh 1817.
I am certain that this is them and Bungie is a mis-trasctiption of Bunyie

EDIT:
Again looking at Family Search, it would appear that daughter Isabella Nicol married Adam Gray in 1853.
Adam was also from Melrose.
On the marriage info, I spotted that Isabella has acquired the middle intitial of "M".
If she was the 2nd daughter, she would be named for her father's mother....... perhaps :
Isabella Murray Nicol?

Well done, annep5892!
Looking at original on SP states:
Andrew Nicoll, Teacher of Tolbooth Parish, married Janet Bungie, of same parish, dau. of Andrew Bungie, Manufacturer of Melrose. Married 7/4/1817 Edinburgh City
Looks like her family had moved to Melrose and presumably where she and Andrew met.

Hi Annette,
My understanding is that both Andrew Nicol and Janet Bunyie were from Melrose, Roxburghshire
Born Melrose : (Educated in Edinburgh?) Married in Edinburgh moved to Carstairs soon after, and then onto Carnwath
If we could prove that Andrew was the son of John Nicol and Isabella Murray, it is quite easy lo locate other children born to them.
John and Isabella had a son called Walter Murray Nicol who married and lived in Edinburgh.
He too was a teacher, and church minister, but will keep that on the back burner until there is some proof!

Ladies, what can I say? The speed with which you have cleared up this issue for me is quite impressive. Thank you so much for the trouble that you have gone to.
What it means is that this family connection does not relate to me but I know who it does relate to and I am sure that he will be very pleased to get this information. (He is actually visiting Scotland from Australia shortly, with the aim of doing some family research whilst he is there; thanks to you he can now research the correct family!)
Regards, Bill

Andrew Nichol buried 28/10/1854 at Carnwath, aged 58, of 'Congestion on the brain' so unfortunately died pre civil registration.
However, knowing he was born Melrose the only one born there relevant time was the one whose parents were John Nichol and Isabella Murray so think this has to be him i.e. born 28/12/1795, bp.26/6/1796 Melrose.

Can we help with who you are actually looking for (if not the Andrew born at Melrose)? Is it an Andrew Nichol bc.1790 as in the title of this post?

Hello Annette
Thanks for the offer but I'm happy. I originally had Andrew Nicol (1790) recorded as the son of one of my relatives (along with about 10 other children). The information provided by you ladies has confirmed that Andrew is not related and therefore of no further interest to me. However, I have recently been contacted by someone who has looked at my tree on Ancestry and who is in fact related to Andrew. Your information can now put him on the correct line. (to Melrose).
I have given this person a link to this post so that he can get his tree in order! (He may even join in if he has further queries.)
Thanks again,Bill.

Hi All - So happy to have stumbled upon this thread. I am a descendant of Andrew's through Janet Nicol and know her story once she arrived in Australia and have heirlooms that trace back to her life in Scotland.

Have just completed researching the history of Scots Church Portland Vic which includes the tumultuous 1840s of Rev Alexander Laurie and wife Janet nee Nicol. Note lilymo has some relics. would love to make contact. My maternal ancestors arrived Portland 1841. I also stumbled upon this chain of posts as I have a 1610-11 Geneva Bible with metrical psalms and music bound together. which I believe came to Portland mid 19thC. Nicholson BDM inscriptions 1785-1825. Only one Scottish place name - Leven. Widened research to include Nicol-Nicolson-Nicholson variations and up popped this very long shot link.

I'd be very interested to see the Nic(h)ol/son details from that bible. Could you photograph or scan them and send them to me please?

Hello there!
Sorry for the delay but it has taken a while for me to log back in as I had lost my password.
Is it possible to upload documents to this site so that you may see them?
Are you or the descendants of the 841 arrivals still in the Portland area?
Regards.

Now retired in Ballarat I visit Portland a few times each year. Still many history and heritage friends in SW Vic. My mother, who was strong on Portland's heritage, descends from the youngest son of Glaswegian Robert and Isabella Herbertson who arrived 1841. He was a builder publican and retailer. Many of his buildings are still in Portland e.g Steam Packet Inn, top half of Julia St and Briery. Dad's family was all 75% Argyllshire shepherd stock, 25% Glasgow. After Laurie's death in 1854 Jane obviously blossomed and became an active member of Bridgewater and Portland life. Do you live in SW Vic or belong to any Portland FB groups?
