Post by: jillyg on Friday 07 June 13 07:30 BST (UK)
I am new to Roots chat. I am searching my paternal Grandmothers ancestry.
She was born Pwllhai in 1895, to a William Llewelyn  Jones and Elizabeth Davies.
I cant find them on the 1901 census.
I was told there my be a connection to the Gwbert Hotel and she gave roller skating lessons on the flat roof!
William was a medical assistant. can anyone help?

Think so!

There's also a Gwbert Hotel in Cardigan!

My Grandmothers name was Myfanwy Gwendoline Howard nee Jones, Pwllhai is in Cardigan
She had Two brothers William (bill) and Herbert or albert.
I dont know when her parents were married,
I have been able to track down the other sides of my family ,but these are proving elusive.

Do you have her birth certificate?

I have a feeling that her parents married after her birth?

There is no birth for a Myfanwy Jones, in Cardigan Registration District, in 1894, 1895 or 1896.
BUT there is a birth for a Myfanwy Davies! :o  This is the only Myfanwy birth registered  in Vardigan during that time.

I have visited Cardigan several times and remember that Pwllhai is the lower part of the main street of shops running through the town .  The Market Hall is located there.

I have just looked up the delicatessen , Nelsons, which I thought was in Pwllhai  Have confirmed it is. The Post code is  SA43 1JR . Hope that helps to locate your relative's area of birth. Is it possible that her parents were shop keepers ? Sandra

Pwllhai is within Cardigan Town itself, along the riverbanks between the castle and the church (if I've got my bearings right)

Going north from the bridge, one end of Pwllhai begins at the top of the high street on the right  and meanders around eastwards a bit, crossing Morgan Street and down towards the river. There's a Pwllhai road sign  on the Red Lion Pub.

The Cliff Hotel used to be the Gwbert Inn and it's got a flat roof so maybe that's where the roller skating took place.

I cannot find the family on any census .

I think I must return and try to find out more from there,as I now live in Australia it takes some organizing.
Thank you for your help .Regards Jill

Hi Jill,

I have found a death of a William Llewelyn Jones of Tuberculosis in 1909. If this is him, do you know when he was born. I am finding that William Llewelyn Jones is quite a common name.  ???

Welsh newspapers on line   http://welshnewspapers.llgc.org.uk/en/home

If you search for "pwllhai" and limit your search to 1892 (use slider bar), there is an item in the Cambrian News and Merionethshire Standard, 13 May 1892, that mentions a William Llewellyn Jones, an Elizabeth Davies and a Mary Tudor Davies

Just returning to this thread!

You say Myfanwy was born in April 1893?
So I assume this is the birth?

March qtr 1893
Cardigan district    vol 11b, page 8
Jones, Myfanwy Gwendoline

Or was it this one?

March qtr 1893
Cardigan district    vol 11b, page 7
Jones, Gwladus Myfanwy

What was her father's name on the birth certificate?

Myfanwy Gwendoline Jones ....so the first one.
Fathers name on birth cert William Llewellyn Jones
I am beginning to suspect her parents may not have been married , is this possible?
The article in the Cambrian news regarding a "domestic " at her Mothers house was 9months before my grandmother was born.mmmmh
