Hi
I'm researching the Berncastle family and have become stuck.
On the 1911 census Guy Measham Berncastle is living in Hammersmith, London. The step son of Herbert Melbourne Berncastle and Sarah Berncastle.
Herbert Melbourne Berncastle married Sarah Measham 4th Quarter of 1909 in Fulham.
From the 1911 Census Guy Measham Berncastle was born in Switzerland in 1907.
How do I find his birth?
I imagine his name at birth was Guy Measham!!
Kind regards
Chris

The first thing you have to establish is whether Sarah Measham was her birth name ?? have you found Sarah Measham on any census ?
On 1911 census where was Sarah born ???...England or Switzerland ??
-
OK ...I have found where Sarah was born - back soon
-
1881 census
17 Wilbury Mews
Hove
Sussex
Sarah Measham aged 4 born Compstall,Derbyshire
family
Georg Measham aged 33 b Bagworth ,Leics
Ellen wife aged 26 b Compstall,Derbys
Sarah aged 4 b Compstall
William aged 2 b Brighton
Annie aged 0 b Brighton ...........
this is Sarah Berncastle - confirmation thru 1911 census info
So - pretty sure Guy would have been born Guy Measham .....

There appear to have been two sons - Guy (1907) and John (1906) Measham Berncastle (plus a third, Frank Measham Berncastle, born after the marriage - deceased 2002).
Herbert's obituary (europepmc.org/articles/PMC2026164/pdf/brmedj03065-0071c.pdf ) says three sons - so they were raised as his.
They do not appear (under Measham or Berncastle, at least) on the consular birth indexes - which unfortunately only means that she might not have registered them. If you know where (what church, if it was a church wedding) the marriage took place you might find a late baptism for one or both boys there. Or perhaps some later record (shipping?) might give you a more exact birthplace.
Not knowing exactly where they were born (or what name they might have been born under) will make getting any info out of Switzerland difficult.

Thank you

I will get the marriage certificate ordered.

Hi,
Wondered about the name of "Berncastle", having visited Bernkastel in Germany :) Tried Berncastel and found Frank Measham Berncastel on a Navy List on A'cy. There seem to be a number of "Berncastels" in the South of England but haven't researched further.

Assumedly, the brother, John Measham Berncastel or Berncastle sailed to Port Said and gave his occupation as civil servant (maybe records here)
He also sailed to USA from Southampton 1947 and gave his address as c/o United Nations, NY (also a channel to follow).

Hi Chris
Sarah is listed as "Spinster" and her father is George Measham, "of Independent means."
I will send you a copy as soon as I get a minute to scan the certificate.

I've just done a bit more of the Berncastle family tree and Guy Measham Berncastle had a daughter whose middle name is BYLL.
I've not seen BYLL before I wonder if it's part of the Swiss connection?

Did you find the info you were looking for? I am part of the family (by marriage) and have a lot of documents and info. Are you related to the Berncastle's?
-
Hi Sunflower8
I am not related. I am doing the Berncastle tree for Josie daughter of Guy Kingsley Berncastle, who is son of RIchard A C Berncastle, the son of Guy Measham Berncastle. After researching her tree and discovering her Great grand father Guy Measham Berncastle was born in Switzerland, Josie was fascinated and wanted to know more but we have hit a brick wall.
Any information or help would be brilliant.
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,
I was married to Richard's cousin Andrew (died 2010), son of Frank Measham Berncastle. Frank did a lot of family research and wrote a pamphlet called "Berncastle Forbears". I have his notes, family tree and some documents. I will look to see what birth/marriage certificates I can find. Josie's grandfather, Richard, would be a good person to talk to. Byll is Richard's sister Rosemary, but they don't really talk to each other - I believe she is in contact with Josie's father, Guy. I don't know about Swiss connection. There is a Berncastle connection in Trier though.
Good luck with the research, maybe Josie can come and look at the stuff I have one day. I live in Hampshire.
Regards
Hilary
