I have recently found 2 baptismal records which I presume are for the same person
Joseph Frith son of John Frith, Yeoman, of Mirrall Common, Oxted and Joseph Frith son of John Frith, both on 7 Feb 1674/75, the first in Limpsfield, the second in Oxted.
I would like to know where Mirrall common was/is, and also has anyone any suggestions as to why he should appear in both parish registers? I have checked other baptisms in Limpsfield at the same time, and they are not duplicated in Oxted

Just a thought but I wonder whether it could be Merle Common to the south of Oxted?

Good morning all
It probably is Merle Common as spelling wasn't formalised in those days, a name (place & person) was spelt how the clerk thought it ought to be spelt.
I have found a couple of instances of people being in two adjoining Parish registers, it was probably because the person/family was well known. The East Surrey Parishes interlock like fingers and families could have trouble reaching one church because of path conditions, so used another church. Perhaps the next week they remarked to the Rector that they'd had a child baptised at a neighbouring church and he put it in his register.

Thank you, Kay and Pirate.
I agree Merle Common is very probable - but with no knowledge of the area, I didn't know of it's existence to start looking, and couldn't find anything remotely matching it yesterday.
Pirate, I have rechecked the registers and you are probably right - the Limpsfield records are consecutive, whereas in the Oxted records, the previous baptism recorded was on the 24 Feb 1674/75, next came Joseph Frith who was baptised c 3 weeks before that, on 7 Feb 1674/75.
And not just East Surrrey adjoining parishes, but Surrey and Kent adjoining parishes interlock like fingers.
Thanks very much, both of you.

G'day all
Merle Common is south of Limpsfield, near Staffhurst Wood, OS map ref 407491. It's not that far from Edenbridge, so you might find some connections there.
