Title: Maryland Birth - Hiram Emery Pierce
Post by: dpaton on Saturday 01 June 13 14:54 BST (UK)
I am trying to find any information on Hiram Emery Pierce who is stated as being a mariner and a native of Baltimore, Merryland, . He is listed as being 25 in 1863 when he landed in Sydney on the Templar.  He married my gggrandmother in Sydney in 1866. He and Annie (nee Jones) then went to NZ where my greatgrandfather was born in Wellington before returning to live in Balmain Sydney.  I would really appreciate it if anyone had any information that could help me clear this up.
Thanks DPaton

There is some information about Baltimore birth records here - http://baltimorecityhistory.net/research-at-the-baltimore-city-archives/vital-records-of-baltimore-city/  It mentions that there wasn't systematic recording of these records until 1875.

I didn't see any likely matches on a quick check, but you could try looking for him on the 1850 & 1860 US census on www.familysearch.org.  Prior to 1850, only the head of household's name was listed on the census.

Thanks for that I have tried looking at all those sites but haven't been able to find anyone that fits except for a Hiram Emery Pierce born in main so am at a loss either his birth is not recorded or he is the Hiram Emery Pierce born in Main and the wrong information was put on his marriage notice. Hope I can come across some definite info that will confirm he is the same Hiram. Thanks DPaton

Many family trees are going down the avenue of Hiram born in Maine - maybe because of the lack of other records. Many records were destroyed during the civil war so it gets harder the further back you go. Many births were not recorded back then, sometimes Church records can help but you would have to know exactly where.
Some message board posts go back to 2001 so still a work in progress.

There are references to Hiram Emery Pierce being in Maine in the 1870's and 1880's and dying in 1892 in these -

There's a posting that gives the parents of your guy as Hiram Pierce and Mary Delaney, but no source given - http://www.familytreecircles.com/looking-for-family-line-of-president-franklin-pierce-of-hillsborough-3216.html

Hiram was living in Australia and New Zealand during these dates so it couldn't be the same Hiram and he died in Sydney Australia.  On his death record it states that his parents were Hiram Pierce and Mary Delaney but I have been unable to find any reference to them especially Mary Delaney, I so far have been unable to find any record of her anywhere.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks DPaton

I am a GGgranddaughter of Hiram E & Annie Elizabeth,My Great Grandfather was George Albert Picton Pierce,my Grandfather was George Hiram Emery Pierce.I have recently started a family tree& have also been prompted to follow the Maine connection,of Hiram E born in 1838 , he is the son of Hiram  born in1817 & Deborah born in 1816. I have no further conclusive information, I haven't been able to obtain a death record . If your Hiram died in 1901 in Balmain North there are no parents listed on that registration, so I can't help with Mary Delaney.
Cheers

I am also a GGGranddaughter of Hiram Emery Pierce their son Hiram William Pierce was my GGrandfather and his daughter Essie Gladys Pierce was my Grandmother on my mothers side.  I can't remember where I came across Mary Delany as his mother, I will search through his records to find it.  I always thought he was born in Baltimore as on this marriage announcement it states that he is a native of Baltimore, Maryland but maybe this is wrong as I have recently discovered that in the same marriage announcement it also states that Annie Elizabeth Jones is the daughter of the late Charles Jones of Kent Street, native of the Colony.  I have just discovered that he was actually born in England and left Annie's mother Margaret and returned to England in 1853 with Annies's older brother Charles where he remarried and then went to America before having another six children.  He died in America.  So it appears that not much was actually correct in that marriage announcement.  Therefore Deborah Watson could be Hiram Emery's mother, just need some proof.

I'm another descendant from the mysterious Hiram. Annie Pierce was my great grandmother. Seems the popular opinion now is that Hiram Emery Pierce was born in Maine, was registered for the draft for the civil war, but left New York on the Templar and headed for Oz. The marriage cert ref to Baltimore as his birthplace may have just been covering his tracks.
Would love to connect up via email with any "cousins"

There's a 1905 Maine death record for Hiram Pierce, age 68, son of Hiram Pierce and Deborah Watson - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KCD8-78C

This appears to be Hiram Pierce with grandmother Lucy Watson (presumably Deborah's mother) in the 1880 census - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MFQ7-KVS

The 1860 census appears to have two Hiram Pierces of about the same age listed separately in Waldo Co., Maine.  One is with Hiram, Deborah, and family and one is a farm laborer.  I don't know if it's one guy showing up on the census twice or if there was more than one guy in the area with the same name and age.

If this record is correct then this Hiram is not the same Hiram who came to Australia.  Maybe he did come from Baltimore and have so far been unable to find him.  Back to square one.

Hi F. Pierce,

I would be happy to share any information I have so far on our family tree.  All the information I have so far is on Ancestry.com under Joseph Henry Whitehouse tree.  There is a lot on there that I am still trying to verify.  Am especially having trouble finding any reliable information on Hiram Emery Pierce.

Regards
DPaton

Thanks D.patton.
Do I have to join ancestry to view the tree. It sounds like you have been doing a lot of research.
I wondered if you knew much about my grandparents, your grandparents, as nobody seems to know much about Hiram.
I am also interested in hearing more about your grandmother Essie, as my father always spoke fondly of his sisters.
My e-mail is frances_pierce@hotmail.com.
Kind Regards,
Frances
