Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me with a brick wall. My G-G-Grandfather William GALE was born about 1830 (all census records & his marriage certificate suggest this date). On the 1861 Census he cites his birthplace as Salcombe Devon but on all other records he merely states "Devon". His marriage certificate (30 Nov 1852 at St John the Baptist Church in Hoxton Middlesex) states his father was William GALE (mariner-deceased). Can anyone please help finding William's baptism.

Hi
In the 1841 census there is a 12 year old William Gale in Salcombe Village, (a male servant working on a farm).
The registration district is: Honiton Union
Sub District is: Ottery St Mary & Sidmouth
Parish: Salcombe Regis.
Class HO107 Piece 208 Book 2.
From FS there is this baptism:
William Gale bapt. 13 April 1828 Ottery St Mary, Devon. Parents: William Gale and Mary.

Hi Claire, Thanks for this. I had seen the census info before but the baptism is one I'd not yet found.

Unfortunately that Williams Father was a Shoemaker. The entry is on FreeREG 13 April 1828.

A William GILL was baptised at Salcombe Regis 7 June 1829, illegitimate son of Mary GILL. Try contacting the OPC for Salcombe - details at http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/SalcombeRegis/index.html - scroll down to Genealogy for the link. He may be able to provide more details.
