Here is a possibility- have you looked at this information?
Arthur Coveney married Edith Harris in 1892.
There is a death for Edith in 1900.
In 1901 Arthur is a widower with Matilda 2 yrs and Gladys 1 yr.

Her birth cert (or marriage cert) shold show you more details.
Births Dec 1896

Thank you for the replies. Yes think I will have to order her birth certificate. Yes Heywood I was thinking that may of been her with her grandparents. If they has just been visiting that day as apposed to living with them would that be noted on the census? So in 1901 Edith and Lilian were in separate places? I've read an article from a Thanet newspaper reporting on Edith's marriage to Stephen Twyman in 1911 where it says that Edith was given away by her Uncle so I'm assuming her father wasn't about anymore, no mention of her mother either, although there are a few Mr and Mrs Coveney's listed in the congregation. Can't think why her father wouldn't give her away if he was there

From looking at the 1881 census , it seems that Mary is the only girl , with 2 older brothers and younger one also

Ah lovely thanks Jan, was just going to say I can't find her
-
As far as I can see, Thomas and Susannah only had the one daughter, Mary.
Sons of an age to be the father of the girls are Thomas born abt 1869; Arthur abt 1871 and Alfred abt 1876.
I was thinking that as Arthur's wife was Edith, there was a link with the name.
However, I notice that there are several Edith Coveneys around Kent so that is perhaps wrong.
As Carol advises, it would be best to get the certificate to be certain.
best wishes
Heywood
Sorry - I am watching television at the same time and missed Jan's posts ;)

1911 census found a Charlie Coveney married to a Mary coveney with a daughter Lilian aged 1, wouldn't fit with the date of birth I have, but as I have Lilian's middle name as Mary, could possibly be the right family
-
You definitely should get the certificate with all these repeated names. :)

Just ordered it now. Very confusing! Thanks for the help
