Title: Goodrich in Baltimore Maryland
Post by: mickcee on Sunday 26 May 13 12:42 BST (UK)
Seeking maiden name of Mary F. Goodrich, died July 22 1922, buried St Marys Episcopal Cemetery, Hampden.
Also seeking info on my wife's grandfather's American family. Grandfather was Richard Charles Goodrich, born at 107  Cedar Ave Evergreen, Baltimore City MD in 1894, moved to Australia about 1913. The street is now Keswick Rd. His mother was Mary Lewes - is this lady the Mary F. Goodrich who died in 1922. Adelbert (stone cutter and also Police in a couple of Baltimore Directories) seems to have died about 1906-7. Adelbert, son of Hiram and Jane (Whipple) was born 1851 in Oswego NY. There is also a Hiram died 5/5/1972 buried in same plot as Mary F.. Is he Hiram Hubbard Goodrich and if so maybe a connection with Hubbard Goodrich of William Bingham Goodrich family.

Hello Sandra, thanks for your Post. The earlier Posts you referred me to were actually mine. As a result of the responses to them I have been able to delve a little further into the family, but the absence of Birth, Death & Marriage Indexes on-line over in US make it near impossible to track them down from over here in Australia. Hence the requests on this Forum.

The link to previous threads was posted so people don't duplicate what's already been found.

Have you tried to contact the cemetery to see if they have further information?

If he died in Baltimore, there is a death index that covers 1972 here - http://mdvitalrec.net/cfm/dsp_seriesunit.cfm?qu=CE&sr=42&tp=d&src=cty&it=pages

Please note that Mary F. Goodrich died on July 22 1921 - not 1922 as I previously wrote. Sorry about that.

Hi
I found Adelbert and family in 1900 Census listed in Hampden Baltimore City as Delbert Godridge.
This was only after I found Jess Lewis who purchased the cemetery Lot in which Mary F Goodrich was buried in 1921. Jess seems to have been Mary F's brother and lived nearby in Hampden, so I went back street by street in the Census and, there they were!!

I have purchased the Death Certificate of Mary F. Goodrich from Baltimore State Archives and I'm currently waiting for it's delivery.
I have found a listing of a death on June 3 1904 for an Adelbert Goodrich in Smyrna New York. I don't know if is the man I am looking for, but he had a brother, John W Goodrich in Smyrna and also a sister, Grace E. Storr in Sherborne, so it may be he died while visiting his siblings.
Can anyone help with how to get an Index Number for this Death so I can order a copy? All my searches for New York Vital Statistics on the 'net have been unsuccessful.
Cheers

You don't need a number to order death certificates from New York State.  You can see more information about ordering them here - http://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/genealogy.htm

It appears that Adelbert was age 53 at his death - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nychenan/smy1904v.htm

On www.fultonhistory.com, there are a number of articles that mention Adelbert Goodrich.  Not sure if all the mentions are of the same guy, but one story says he was a Baltimore telephone operator who had a scare while doing work at an insane asylum.

Shelley, thanks for the links to those sites - especially the one for the certificates. I'll have a better look in the morning - it's late here now.

Gravestone for Grace E. Goodrich Storrs in Chenango Co., New York:  http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=84757598

Census records have John W. Goodrich & Grace Storrs both born in Maryland.

1900 for Grace - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MS6G-HLJ

1900 for John - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MS6P-D61

1910 for John - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M5CW-YJS

1880 census has Adelbert with siblings John W. & Grace:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MN31-JVH

The 1903 Baltimore city directory has Adelbert Goodrich, stonecutter, living at 107 Cedar av. N, and Adelbert, Jr., electrician.  The 1905 Baltimore city directory has only Adelbert P. Goodrich, lineman.

On www.fultonhistory.com, I found an obituary for Grace E. Storrs, which says she is survived by her husband, 10 children, and siblings Mrs. Alice Santomyre of Baltimore and John Goodridge of Smyrna.

There is also a mention on that site of the marriage between Bayard Storrs of Otselic and Miss Gracie Goodrich of Baldwinsville, New York.  They were married 22 Oct. 1884 in Otselic.

Shelley, you are wonderful, taking the time to look up all this information on my behalf. I have come across Adelbert Jnr in the various Baltimore Directories already - he stopped being called "Jnr" in the 1905 Directory which led me to believe Adelbert Senior was no more, hence the interest in the 1904 death in Smyrna. Adelbert the telephone electrician is in the 1910 Census, wife Sarah, son also an Adelbert, but disappears after about 1917. This third Adelbert goes on in Baltimore, as an electrician until his death in 2003 or thereabouts. There is an Adelbert, born 1881, in New York, hotel clerk or similar, in the ww1 Draft Registration. His mother sounds like our Mary F and the address given for her is the same as one where Hiram (brother of Adelbert the first) was living. Are the two Adelberts the same person. I can find no trace of Adelbert Jnr after 1910 Census and then the 1917 Directory where he is at a Lunch Room. Anyhow, Thanks heaps.

Dear Shelly, I've just had a look at the Vital Records site you suggested - it cites a possible 8 month or more wait plus it only seems to have snail-mail access. There is also the difficulty of paying in US dollars for me from Australia to overcome as well. My cheques and Money Orders are not recognised over there. Oh, why do they not have email and electronic cash transfer available??
Thanks for all your help

Hello again, since my last Post here, I have established that the Mary F. Goodrich buried in 1922 was indeed nee Mary Lewis (not Lewes), thanks to getting her Death Certificate from Baltimore Archives. I sent away in October for Adelbert Goodrich's Death Certificate in New York through Archives.com and I am still waiting for that. I had to find someone in America to send the Certificate to, as they don't mail to overseas - they readily take your money for their subscription though. I found a reference to Jans M Goodrich applying for a Civil War Widow Pension in 1890 for a Hiram H Goodrich, discharged medically Unfit in 1863 in Pennsylvania. It gave the details of his Unit, so I took a punt that this might be Jane not jans Goodrich and so I sent away to your Federal Archives for the genealogy Package ($30). I received this, mailed to Australia in very quick time (congrats to them) and it was like Christmas. It stated that Jane M Goodrich was married as Whipple and her husband Hiram H Goodrich had died in Lamonti? Michigan in October 1873. Great!! I found out where Hiram had died ( his death details state that he was Single so maybe they were no longer together - it also gave his Parents names as Hubbard & Sophia Goodrich nee Bingham) While this information was good, Hiram's own Application for Disability Pension gave his Place of Birth as Jefferson New York.  So he was William Bingham Goodrich's brother. It allows me to go right back to Ensign William Goodrich in America, and further back to Suffolk in UK - Xmas came early for me!! All the best in 2014

Hi again, to add to the previous Post. On Jane M Goodrich nee Whipple's Widows Pension Application she was living at Lamsons NY, the 2 Witnesses were son John Goodrich and (I presume) daughter Ida M Robbins. The Baldwinsville Gazette, Farmers Journal of February 1891 state Jane M Goodrich, aged 61, died of cancer on Feb. 13, 1891.
Hiram H. Goodrich Physician, died at Wright, Ottawa Co. Michigan. Strange, I thought, why was he there? But further research showed that his mother, Sophia Goodrich nee Bingham, re-married to a Silas Lillie of St Lawrence NY after the death of her husband Hubbard in a well collapse in 1835. She and Silas lived in Wright, Ottawa as did Hiram's sister Mary (Ann). Silas died in 1861 aged 71, so what happened to Sophia after his death - still to find this out. Mary Ann went on to marry William Robert Eckler before dying about 1866.
Another brother of Hiram was Delos Goodrich who enlisted in Company I of 1st Wisconsin Cavalry in 1861 and died of disease in Stevenson Alabama in 1864.
And so it goes on.
