Title: Nice names
Post by: Clarkey500 on Wednesday 22 May 13 19:38 BST (UK)
I was going through my tree and stumbled to someone with the middle name 'Peace' because she was born on the 11 November 1918. Which made me think if there was any other nice middle names/forenames.  :)

If you search FreeBMD with just Jubilee, or *Jubliee1 in the forename box, you will find it popping up now and again through the early years of civil registration.  In 1887, however, there are hundreds of births registered  of children who have been given Jubilee as forename.  The same thing happened in 1897. (Queen Victoria's Golden and Diamond Jubilee years)

1 This will find a middle name.

What a lovely idea to name a child according to a historic event, especially Peace for one born on Armistice Day.

I have nothing like that in my tree, although I do have a family who for several generations named one of their daughters Truth.

Another name from my tree is perhaps unusual, Athalia - apparently it was the name of an oratorio by Handel.  I wonder how it came about that an ordinary family gave a child that name?  Perhaps it was popular back in 1830.

Just yesterday, I discovered the name Amia in my tree from 1700 something or other.  I love the name and it means beloved.  So I spoke to my daughter ( cos I am going to be a great gran in August  :) ) and when I told her the name, she said... uuhm well you had better talk to 'the parents' and guess what when I did they have already chosen the name for the new baby and it is
AMELIA ... oooooo spooky

 ;)

One of my Blue family married a George Lavender (of Lavender Bay in Sydney, for the Aussies).
One of their grand-daughters had forenames of Laura Lavender Blue - I've often wondered if she was as nice as her name sounds.

Not my own tree, but one I was researching out of interest in the son (Alvah Cook) was his mother - Araminta Axford.  Rolls off the tongue nicely.

It has to be said that the Ancestry transcriptions of this name did not do it justice.

Hope your Flower was a girl!  I nursed a returned soldier with that for a first name, years ago.  And his father had the same name!  Wouldn't they have come in for some ribbing??

A French person called Pascale, meaning Easter-time, may well have been born at Easter.

On the theme of names, could I again float Espar/Esper - the middle name of one of my grt-uncles. Has anyone seen this name before?

Also in 19thC West Yorks. my ancestors had a neighbour called Original Bower- always sticks in my mind.

Other flowers used as names that I have come across are Daisy, Iris, Heather, Primrose and Marguerite.  A family who are very eco aware have a daughter named Maple (tree)    The name Flora seems to have lost its appeal since it became a brand name for a type of margarine.

I think "Lent" would be preferable to "Maundy Thursday".

A local florists had 2 Saturday girls : Heather and Rose!
As a teacher I've come across many lovely (and to be frank also some rather unwise) names. I can't quote any of them, as the owners will still be alive, naturally. But imagine the surname Warrior with a ,shall we say, floral Christian name- what a delightful and beguiling combination.
