Looking for info on this distant branch of my family the WARDS.
Mary (Corky, Corkie, Corkey) was born around 1863 in Greenock to parents Francis & Bridget.
In 1886 she married John Ward here in Greenock, but after 10yrs of marriage she commited suicide in 1896 not before having 3 children, Catherine(1887), Mary(1889) & John(1891).
Trying to find them through Scotlandspeople but have seem to lose them after their mothers death. Did her John Ward remarry?? if so where and to who, and did the kids emigrate when older or move to England.
Could anyone help, many thanks.

1891 shows John was born Ireland 1861. Have you checked the Irish 1901 and 1911 census in case he returned to Ireland after his wife's death
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search
Who were his parents on the 1886 marriage cert as you would need that info to find any possible re-marriage if it took place in Scotland

I didn't check the Irish records as I have limited info on where he was born and since Ireland was part of the UK at the time, then as you know, no records where recorded for travel between Scotland and Ireland or even within the UK.
I have his parents as Bernard Ward + Catherine Bust.
Having done a search think found him in Gatehead, Durham in 1901. If anyone can verify this thanks.
Thanks.

Just in case you haven't seen this-
"Mary Corkie, wife of John Ward, labourer, committed suicide at 2 Buccleuch Street, Greenock on 23rd May 1896 age 32. (Greenock Telegraph 25.5.1896)"

The 1901 census you mention is not your man. Yes, he was born Ireland 1861 but was a Coal Miner and his 4 children all born in Durham between 1884 and 1891.

Have found them in 1901, still in Greenock, although John senior lost 3 years along the way.
1901 Census - 3 Market Street, Greenock - ref. CSSCT1901_193
Lodging with a William and Janet Gisbey
John Ward Widower 37 Red Leader (whatever that is) b. Ireland
John Ward son 10 Scholar b. Greenock
James Ward son 8 ditto
I'm only able to view transcript of Scottish census - don't know what happened to his daughters (can find no trace of them) but checked SP births and John and Mary did have a son James born 1893.
James Ward b.23/1/1893 at 31 Charles Street, Greenock, son of John Ward, Shipyard Labourer and Mary, nee Corkie.

cheers guys
If John lost 3yrs that that would explain a lot, I assumed that as his 2 daughters were alive in 1891 they had a good chance of still being with him in 1901 as his son John. I only allowed 2yrs difference in the Census records.
I didn't know about James, looked through INVERCLYDE BMD (Intimations) and could not see anything for this family only Mary's suicide.

James' birth on Scotlands People - I viewed the certificate.

Hi Annette
Sorry if I sounded rude, I meant that I did a search of the Inverclyde BMD to see if his birth was maybe recorded, but greatly appreciate that you managed to find his birth cert.

Red Leader was the person who painted Red Leaded paint onto metal (ships etc)

If lead was used, then probably died young. Wouldn't expect him to be more than in his mid 50's when he died then.
