Title: what is the uniform this man is wearing?
Post by: wallaroo on Tuesday 21 May 13 07:29 BST (UK)
The photo shows an unidentified possible member of my family. This photo may possibly be easily dated because Mitchell & Co. were appointed photographers by Governor Duff who was in office for the short period of 2 years - Duff was appointed in March 1893 and died of multiple hepatic abscesses and septicaemia on 15 March 1985.
Did the appointment message have to be immdediately removed or could this be on the bottom for some time after his death?
The other thing I would like to know is what kind of work does the uniform signify?

cheers

The badge on the cap looks like a shipping company emblem?

Is there someone in RootsChat or somewhere else that describes uniforms and the dates they were issued?

If the badge is a Thistle - Burns, Philip and Company Limited (A shipping line based in Sydney Austrailia) were using the Thistle emblem on their flags certainly around 1943.  Not sure if they were using it earlier.  Not sure if that is any help or not.

Got a bit more - Burns Philp and Co was formed in 1883, and ceased trading in 1970.

I hope so stevew101. I am having trouble finding a bloke in our tree that would have been born c.1853. In  a family of sailors there is only one that we know anything about :((
