I am trying to find out more about my Great Uncle Frederick Williams who was born in Carlow in the mid to late 1800s. I believe he was married to a Mary Deegan who may have come from Arles or Carlow town and may have been a confectioner. The reason I think there may be a connection with Arles is that I believe Uncle Fred was buried there. He died in Carlow on 15th. June 1951. Any help would be very welcome.
Mary.

Have you found him in any census records yet (on http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/)? have you checked for a possible birth registration (on www.familyseach.org)?
-
yes I have found Fred on 1901 and 1911....I am now trying to progress. I remember seeing him as a small child....he died just before I was 4.
-
Was he married in the 1911 Census - if so there should be a record of how many years married and it would be possible to look for the marriage cert .

No he was still single then.

There is an entry in the civil marriage index for a Frederick Williams Carlow registration district Oct-Dec 1913 Vol. 3 page 311 However the three females listed on teh same page are annie Slattery Bridget Mooney and Mary Neill - it maybe that one female was omitted as there are 4 males (including Frederick ) on the same page. May be a possibility. I didn't find any other Frederick Williams that might be relevant.
I'm curious where is the Arles you refer to ?

based on the date of death you mentioned and the corresponding BMD Index entry (died age 82 - so born c1869) this appears to be Frederick Williams on the census returns :
1901 William's household, Tullow St., Carlow town (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Carlow/Carlow/Tullow_Street/1041316/)
1911 Williams household, Yellow St., Carlow town (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Carlow/Carlow_Urban/Yellow_Street/912808/)
Arles is a village located in the townland of Ballynagall, Co. Laois to the north west of Carlow town. It's also the name of the RC parish for that area.

for a link to Index record for that 1913 marriage see : https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FY63-6PL
You have to search separately for possible brides - checking for matching references. (Some subscription websites allow to view possible matches)
for details on ordering certs see :

Thank you so much for your help. I think I'm going to invest in a couple of days in the GRO research room.......I have lots to look up so it could prove very worthwhile.
