Hi Folks,
I am trying to trace descendants of my Great grandfather's children.
He was Richard Fitzgerald and he married his first wife Ann Mahony in Skibbereen in 1846.
They had 4 children: Ellen (1855)
John (1857)
Bridget (1859)
Catherine(1847)
His second marriage was to Mary Grace in 1861.
I am trying to make contact with a son his, Richard (1875), who married in England. Also Annie Mary (1872), who married Grace and emigrated to America.
Mary (1882) married Fitzpatrick, and lived in the Drinagh area I understand.
He also had a daughter Margaret, who married Daniel ( The Master) McCarthy in 1888, they had a few children, some of whom may have emigrated to England.
I would really appreciate it if any of you could help me.
Thanks,
Anna

Welcome to Rootschat :)
parents Richard Fitzgerald & Mary Grace- there could be other children born between the marriage in 1861 and the start of birth registration in 1861 and other children after 1881 (extracted LDS Irish births cover 1864-1881 and are not complete)
BIRTH: Richard Fitzgerald (1867) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPYP-FLS
BIRTH: Patrick Fitzgerald (1869) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPY4-NWB
BIRTH: Anne Mary Fitzgerald (1872) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGTT-S4G
BIRTH: Julia Anne Fitzgerald (1877) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGDV-88T
BIRTH: Matthew Fitzgerald (1879) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGTK-V9H

Hi there,
Thank you so much for that.
Yes their first child was Edmond born 1863.
Margaret born 1865.
I am concentrating my research on Anne Mary at the moment. She married John Grace and emigrated to America. I am to establish if she married here and then travelled, or if they married in the States.
Thanks
Anna
-
Any idea where they lived in U.S.?
-
No idea really.
I have information on a James Grace and an Anna Fitzgerald living in The Bronx.
They married in 1897 and had 7 children.
That James Grace was born in 1870, he arrived in the U.S. on 29/03/1894.
The dates would match up, she was born in 1872, my information was that she married a John Grace, and they lived in the U.S.
I need to get a marriage cert., I guess.

Is this relevant? http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/afaff80053951
-
Yes, that is great.
That explains the "gap" in Richard's family.
I had Catherine born 8-04-1847 ( I don't have her sponsors), and the next child was Ellen born 06-02-1855.
I think that Ellen was born in Dunmanway.
Thank you so much
Anna
-
You will get Catherine's sponsors at www.irishgenealogy.ie if you search there. I'd assumed you had searched this site? I had a quick look yesterday. I think there were other children for the second marriage than those Aghadowey posted from FamilySearch.
-
Thank you . Yes I have the full list of names from Richards second marriage. Also his marriage to Anne Mahony. I have checked the details on the site......yea I will do a double check on Catherine later. I was missing Mortimer as I said so I am thrilled with that info.
Thanks again

Wonder if this is the same Mortimer Fitzgerald?

Hi
Very interesting.
The census return for 1911 could be the one that applies to Mortimer.
According to Birth records we have established the year 1849 which would mean that he would have been 62 years for that census......so there is a discrepancy there.
However, the tradition of the time was to name the First son after the Grandfather, that would fit in in this case.
At the moment I don't know the names of any of Mortimer's siblings children, that would help me with the non family members present on the night. The only one perhaps is his brother John who had 2 daughters Mary Teresa and Ellen, plus one son John.
Thanks a million
Anna
-
The 1901 and 1911 census are for the same Mortimer Fitzgerald.
-
Oh Lord of course they are.
I was confused with the different versions of the forename, also the fact that they had downsized.!
I guess it could be the Mortimer we have been writing about. His Father Richard and Richard's siblings Matthew, Paddy and Edmond all lived in Abbeystrowny.
I need to investigate further.
Thanks a million

Catherine Fitzgerald is listed as a sister-in-law and widow so she was probably married to a brother of Mortimer. Quite a large family he had there- and then there's a nephew Mortimer (son of Catherine?)-
Children of Mortimer Fitzgerald (think he was married twice as there are 2 daughters named Bridget):
1. Mortimer (c1872)
2. Bridget (c1875)
3. Richard (1875) mother Betty Donovan- https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F5HR-TSX
4. Edward (c1879/1881)
5. Katie (c1880)
6. Patrick (c1882)
7. Mary Anne (c1884)
8. Lizzie (c1885/1886)
9. Margaret (c1889/1890)
10. Bridget (c1891)
Also found a Mortimer Anthony Fitzgerald in 1911 English census which might be of interest-
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X7LG-VNW

The four baptisms and birth extract for Richard indicate that the mother was Bessy/Betty Donovan-
3. Richard bapt.1875 http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/5911290056818
4. Edward bapt.1878 http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/2b67560057190
5. Kate bapt.1877 http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/bab53f0057006
6. Patrick bapt.1879 http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/e5f5610057352

Hi
Oh right so perhaps Catherine was married to John Fitzgerald (15-08-1857).
That is super to have the list of names and birth dates.
I must check out that Mortimer Anthony also...
Thanks a million

Hi there
The Richard we have been writing about was born in 1807.
He died OCT-Dec. 1903.
His siblings were, Edward, John, Paddy and Matthew.
His parents were Murty Mor Fitzgerald and Kate( Dearg) Donovan. I suppose a reference to red hair!
Thank you
Anna
-
If this is the same Matthew Fitzgerald then there are baptisms for children on same site-
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/3cb6620003978
-
Hi
I don't think that the Matheus Fitzgerald and Maria Donovan are part of this.
Richard did have a son Matthew(my Grandfather), (11-05-1879) and he married Ellen Daly.
With regard to Murty Mor's family mentioned in the previous post, some older family members think there may also have been another son, James.
Anna
-
No, the dates for that Matthew probably don't fit.
The Richard we have been writing about was born in 1807.
He died OCT-Dec. 1903.
This is the oldest Richard Fitzgerald in 1901 census living in Cork but the age is a bit less- also, children are quite young ???

-
Hi
Yes that Richard is my Great grandfather.
He married twice which explains why the children are so young.
His oldest child from his first marriage was Catherine(1847)
His youngest from his second marriage was Mary born around 1882.
Thanks

Hi Folks
I have been looking for my Grand uncle Richard Fitzgerald born 10-04-1875 in Lisbealad, Dunmanway Co Cork.
Last week I saw him mentioned in the England and Wales National Probate Calendar ( Index of Wills and Administration)
The deceased lady Mary Catherine Fitzpatrick ( Fitzgerald) died in Croyden Surrey 1931. I know for sure that Mary Catherine, who was my Grand aunt is a sister of Richard's, as is the other lady mentioned Juli Ann McCarthy ( Fitzgerald).
How could I find out from that probate where exactly Richard lived at that particular time?
Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated.
Thank you all so much

I have undertaken some FTDNA tests recently and I had a hit on 2 x "Driscoll" surname (kits) who were of this area Skibbereen / Dunmanway.
The link was to being of a Fitzgerald and we were about 3rd-4th cousins.
However I have a Richard Fitzgerald, who was born on 4th Dec 1807 in Market Lane Cork City. He was a brother to my 4th GGF Thomas, born Dunbar St Cork City 1810.
Their parents were William Fitzgerald and Catherine Godson. It is believed that William and Catherine left Ireland for England around the 1830's?.
I don't know what happened to Richard, but his brother Thomas left Cork (and Ireland) in 1839/1840 and headed for Sydney Australia.
Thomas crossed over from being Catholic to Protestant.
Is there any ties with you guys, with Richard migrating from Cork City to the Skibbereen area?
-
Hi Spanrz,
We appear to be from 2 different Fitzgerald Clans.
Yes my great grandfather was Richard Fitzgerald, born in Skibbereen in 1807.
His parents were Morty Mor Fitzgerald and Catherine Donovan.
We believe that Morty and Catherine went to Skibbereen from Mallow.
Richard married twice...his first wife was Anne Mahony from the Schull Co Cork area and that wedding took place 15th February 1846.
Following the death of his wife in 1859 Richard married Mary Grace in 1861.
Wishing you the best of luck with your research. If I come across any information that may be of use to you I will get back to you. "Godson" is an unusual surname and who knows I may come across something of interest at a later stage.
Best wishes

No worries. I am treading very carefully in hoping to find the exact clan of Fitzgerald's that link me.
I'm learning of what the families did, where they were at certain times, to help me place my link.
The reason for the post, was that I have just done some FTDNA and uploaded it to GEDmatch just recently.
Upon the upload, I have been linked to somewhat of a connection to an O'Driscoll family, that are somewhat related to these Fitzgerald's in Skibbereen. Now it's some sort of 3rd-4th cousin type of thing.
Your post about Mallow, is really interesting.
It is not proven from my side (as I have no factual evidence), but off other people I have recently connected with, that the Godson family, were known as Godsell. This family were from Mallow / Rathcormac area.
I have had to use the FTDNA (or the science part) to assist in which clan we belong. As I know how difficult it is, in finding the right one. And more to the point, how easy you can get it wrong.
I have extensive knowledge of my maternal side, which also relates to Cork and Ireland in the most extraordinary way. It is helping me map out what happened to my link. The problem is, not many records survive of this link.
If anyone has done a DNA test and uploaded to Gedmatch, I'd love to know/confirm/deny any connections. I haven't done any Y-DNA yet, but I have done full sequence mtDNA (won't be avail until 2-3 weeks)
My Gedmatch kit is : F322991
Thanks.
-
I'm still watching this with great interest. I am currently talking with a person, who matches up with my DNA on 2 kits. Both kits relate to a possible strong family connection to Skibbereen. We have confirmed a 3rd cousin link to somewhat of a degree but with some minor sketchy details. There were also sprinkles of the family (not sure who), who were based in Kinsale, Dunmanway areas.
I have been DNA matched up with the Collins family as well. This is yet to be investigated.
Now what is intriguing, is that my 4th GGF, has a middle name of Fitzpatrick (noted on Death Certificate). I am still yet to identify why that's there.

Hi Spanrz,
I have been discussing your message with a lady from Cork who is a descendant of a brother of my Great grandfather. She is a descendant of Edward Fitzgerald born in 1809.
We are totally at a loss in relation to placing any of the names that you have mentioned, and yet when you mention a Fitzgerald from Skibbereen......yes that is who we are also.
Do you know the name of Patrick Driscoll's great grandparents, as they may provide a worthwhile clue.
Dunmanway is interesting because my Great grandfather Richard lived in Lisbealad Dunmanway from 1855 till his death in 1903.
Another very good site working somewhat like roots chat is Ireland Reaching Out and it is also well worth looking at and possibly posting a question also.
Best of luck

hello Anna!
I found this forum as I was searching for info on my relatives descended from Daniel the master McCarthy. I am the great granddaughter of him and Kate (O'Driscoll), whose daughter Catherine Teresa (Tess) was my grandmother. I loved reading about your search, you seem as avid a researcher as I am. I would love to fill in the gaps myself about Mary Kate (Daniel and Margaret's) first daughter. Not sure if you know or not, but they had 2 children before she died at 29 I Andorra from a fall from horse and cart (fractured spine). They had a son Cornelius Gerald b 6/15/1891 died at age 7 on 7/27/1898 (also so sad!) After he and Kate O'Driscoll married, they went on to have 10 more children, one of whom they names Cornelius Stephen (perhaps to keep the strong family name - Cornelius was Kate's father and grandfather's name.
I see my catching up with you here is some years later than your original posts, but I would love to know - Were you able to find your Fitzgerald relatives for the reunion in Skibbereen? I am going to be in Ireland in May 2017 and plan to go through Drimoleague/Drinagh/Carrigbawn in Cork to see where my grandmother Tess was raised. she eventually emigrated to the US and settled in Springfield, MA

thanks for the reply! I wasn't sure u were still on the site, since I just joined.
I have been busy searching both of my sides of the family as my grandmother was daughter of Daniel,
but my grandfather (also a McCarthy) was from Green Street, Dingle, County Kerry. even though I have EU Citizenship and much info, it's been awhile since I lived in UK and live in U.S. presently and it's really addictive to do all this research!!!
in the last 48 hours, I think I traced my West Cork roots to the early 10th century, holy moly!!
I prefer to be in the archives personally, but alas, i'm across the pond!
my son is 10 and very excited about all this family he has!!! (he's an only child!)
If you want any info on Daniel (since he fathered some of those Fitzgerald's) let me know!

Hi there,
Well I had always sort of taken it that Mary Kate stayed in Ireland. I had her in the 1901 and 1911 census....at that time she was living with her Dad and his new wife Kate.
So I recently discovered that in 1917 in Hastings she married Cecil Theophilus Joslyn. On the marriage cert her Dad is Daniel...School master.
They had a number of children some of whom died in infancy.
Perhaps it will be possible down the line to make contact with some descendants of theirs. I really need to ascertain for certain that the MK I have mentioned is in fact daughter of my Grandaunt.
Yes Fitzgerald gathering was great but also lots of stress.
I hope that you have a great holiday in West Cork and that you connect up with loads of cousins.
No doubt we will be in touch again
Best wishes
Anna

Hi I’m not totally sure what this thread is about but I’ve been searching my family history with my son for homework and noticed the name Cecil Joslyn. I can confirm he was my grandfather. I thought Mary McCarthy was his mother but this seems to be saying she was his wife? Very confusing. Anyway Cecil lived in London and eventually ended up in St Albans, Herts. I now live in London with my children but really want to visit my roots in Skibbereen….sorry posting this years after the last post!

Hi there,
My grandaunt Margaret Fitzgerald married Daniel McCarthy of Carrigbawn, Drinagh, Co Cork on
11th September 1888
Margaret died on the 19th December 1893 as a result of an accident.
One of the children from that marriage was Mary Kate born 21st August 1889.
I came across a marriage cert some time ago ....marriage of Cecil Joslyn and Mary Kate McCarthy.
Marriage took place August 1917.
Of course I can't be certain that the Mary Kate is daughter of my grandaunt Margaret, and indeed her age in 1917 would be out of sync with her dob.
Her father's name is correct and he was a teacher.
Regards

Hi Anna,
I hope you are well.
I'm new to tracing ancestry.
I started tracing my ancestry a few months ago, although I benefited from my cousin’s dedicated work. On the Fitzgerald/McCarthy side, I've been able to authentically trace back to my great grandparents, Julia Ann Fitzgerald who married Charles McCarthy.
Juli(a) Ann McCarthy (Fitzgerald) (1877 -1957)
Charles McCarthy (1873-1947).
Your post caught my attention as I was exploring the Fitzgerald ancestry. I found a marriage certificate for Julia Ann and Charles with a Richard McCarthy listed as Julia Ann's parent. It appears to be the same family tree.
My grandmother, Josephine P McCarthy, is one of 8 children of Julia Ann and Charles McCarthy.
I mentioned your post to my aunt Linda (who lives in the US and is a daughter of Josephine P McCarthy) a few weeks ago. Josephine P McCarthy traveled to the United States at a young age. My father is a son of Josephine P McCarthy
Linda mentioned that you might have reached out to her a few years ago about the Fitzgerald gathering. Linda changed her email so unfortunately she doesn't have access to your message anymore.
Does this seem like the same family tree as your great grandfather, Richard Fitzgerald.
Born - 4 Dec 1807 Cork, St Finbarr's (South), Cork city, Ireland
Died :Dec 1903 Lisbealad, Co.Cork, Ireland

I noticed an error in my last message:

After many years of research & coming back to this story, the particular details listed above, is what I believe is a very distant Uncle to myself.
The Richard listed as above, had a younger Brother - Thomas, who baptised in 1810, in the same church (South Parish) with the same Parents as Richard (William Fitzgerald & Catherine Godson).
Thomas was married in 1837 to an Elizabeth Ambrose "somewhere" in Cork (listed as Cork & Ross), it's listed only only as an index of marriage bonds. Thomas & Elizabeth came to Australia in 1840/1841 & settled as free immigrants in Sydney.
I got trapped in a very large brickwall, where I have details of these people, but I believe the previous researchers in my family, may have been clutching at straws / presumptive guesses at the parentage of William Fitzgerald - we have a Maurice Fitzgerald & Anne Fitton listed. But DNA suggests something much different.
We don't know what happened to Thomas's brother - Richard, but if the details you have provided above are 100% correct, it directly points to the actual elder brother of our Thomas.
The only device I have to go on, is DNA. But I need to know who has done their DNA & places where Richard's family lived/stayed around for a few decades or the families they involved themselves with.
Using multiple Australian DNA relative matches, I have found that the immigrants Thomas Fitzgerald / Elizabeth Ambrose, are connected 100% undeniable-hard core-community linked to Durrus/Schull/Bantry district. It links to the names & other directly connected families of - Swanton/Camier/Kingston/Copithorne & possibly a Gosnell/s name. I suspect the Ambrose name maybe of this area, as indicated by a 1960's document from Dublin Castle (Genealogical Office).
There could be a historical name change of an earlier Gosnell to a later Godsell/Godson, which fits with my story. Previous researchers have listed our Godson name goes back to a Limerick Godsell family, but again, DNA does not highlight a connection to the Limerick area.
But the case in point, is that I am trying to understand, if the Richard Fitzgerald listed above is confirmed or only a suggestive relative to you guys.
As I am trying to understand if my Thomas may have had a reason to leave Cork City & marry in the West. Thomas may have travelled with Richard??
Thomas was baptised as RC, but left Ireland for Australia in 1841 as a Protestant, we remained that way till around late 1910's (the marriage of my Great Grandparents), where the Protestant Fitzgerald name was transitioned back to RC.

Thomas was married in 1837 to an Elizabeth Ambrose "somewhere" in Cork (listed as Cork & Ross), it's listed only only as an index of marriage bonds.
