Hi
Would someone be so kind to look up a family for me please.
Emma Mary Stevens
born 1863 - Mark Cross, Sussex (according to 1891 census)
Marriage certificate states father as William Stevens
As both names are popular christian names I am looking for Emma Mary as a child living with parents (hopefully) in 1871, so I can identify her parents to enable me to follow this line further.
On the 1891 census she is known by her second name Mary, (as her death certificate states, but marriage certificate states Emma Mary.
Many thanks
Lindy Lou

Hi Lindylou
Have you seen this?
Birth STEVENS Mary Emma June 1864 Uckfield Vol 2b Page 91
Might be worth enquiring whether the father's name is the same?
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi Arranroots
The Uckfield one I have already followed up and unfortunately wasn't mine.

Hi ec
Thanks for the two, that's nearer than I was. Considering she married in 1883 aged 20 I assume the first family are the ones I am after. So will follow that line.
On the marriage certificate states William's occupation as Labourer.
I found Emma Mary on the 1881 at Tunbridge Wells, as a domestic/servant.
Sorry I left that off the first message, as it was rather an obvious fact.

Hi Lindy Lou
I don't want to confuse matters, but if you believe that the first family I mentioned (1871) is the correct one then I think you should consider this 1881 record for your Emma - Speldhurst is also in the Tunbridge Wells area and it looks like her younger sister Annie is also a servant at the same place.
James BEENEY Servant In Charge (Head) Mar 49 Mitcham Surrey Butler Domestic
Matilda STAMP Serv Un 29 Horley Oxford Cook Domestic
Emma STEVENS Serv Un 18 Rotherfield Sussex Housemaid Domestic
Catherine MILLER Serv Un 17 Balcombe Sussex, Kitchenmaid Domestic
Annie STEVENS Serv Un 16 Rotherfield Sussex, Schoolman Domestic
6 Nevill Park Speldhurst, Kent
RG11 0913 / 20 Page 33
Do you have any other info that might help pin it down. I have a suspician that the two families I found in 1871 are related somehow - they both started off in Rotherfield/Mark Cross area and ended up in the Tunbridge Wells area........
Who did Emma marry in 1893?
-
Hi ec
I have been trying to fathom this Emma out for ages.
Emma married Edwin Outteridge, they were my great grandparents.
On the certificate Emma's place of residence is Oxford Restarurant, Tunbridge Wells, which fits in nicely with Speldhurst. I have located a William and Maria Stevens (the first family you mentioned) living at Groombridge Boarding School, Speldhurst in the 1881 census along with other siblings.
I had found the 1881 James Beeney etc but had no real proof it was my Emma but I suspect she is the one.
I think you are right the two families you found may be related because there seem to be a lot of Stevens living in the Rotherfield area at that time.
I really appreciate your help with this one, it has been bugging me for a long time, but with your help it looks as though I maybe going in the right direction.

1851 census index
William Stevens age 12 b Rotherfiled living Mark Cross
with family
Harriet 9 months
John 44 ag lab b Wadhurst
Mary 36 b Rotherfield
Phillidelphia 4
Then we also have
William Stevens age 15 b Rotherfield living New Birchden
George 13 ag lab
James 8
John 2
Mary A 18
Sarah 4
Thomas 3 months
Philadelphia 6 all b Rotherfield
Philadelphia 40 b Lamberhurst
William 41 ag lab b Rotherfield
Still could be either but the younger one is living in Mark Cross at this point.

Just one further thought - have you idntified the witnesses on the marriage cert? Sometimes they help to identify which family you need.
;)
-
1861 the younger William still living in Mark Cross with his parents and sister Harriet. The other William is married to Maria Frances and living a couple of houses away from his parents in Rotherfield.
-
I thnk you need to go to the parish records on this one - they often say a bit more in the margin about which family a child is from or give an address. If a baptism for Mary Emma gives Mark Cross as the address then you know it is her.

Just one thing I am confused about Lindy - in your original post you said you found her as Mary in the 1891 census - did you mean Mary Outteridge (as she was married by then)- I can't find her or her husband in 1891 at the moment >:(
-
Hi ec
Yes she was Mary Outteridge on the 1891 census living at Tunbridge Wells.
I have also found the alot of Steven families on the Sussex Weald site, which gives me two family trees for the two on the families on the 1871 census, so will be able to use that in conjunction with the parish records of course for the evidence I have the right one.
