Just a small correction - his birth was registered in Warrington Lancashire - not Warwickshire but the 1881 census gives his birthplace as Ashton under Lyne

Are you looking for living relatives or some help in tracing his ancestry

Thank you Carole.
I had noticed that before, but on the 1891 census then gives his birth place as Warrington, Lancashire. OK! I see the registration district is Warrington, from the BMD. Thank you again!
I have a family tree on Ancestry and it was only a few months ago that I actually found out my grandfather was Romany. This was shared with me from a distant cousin thru emails at Ancestry. Her 3rd great grandfather (Jacob Winter) and my 2nd great grandfather (Andrew Winter...William Winter's father) were brothers. The difference in the generation of relation to grandfathers, is because I'm quite a bit older than she. I had no idea about my ancestry until this cousin shared with me. Evidently was something my mother's family tried to hide. Including my own mom. Saddens my heart when people live their entire lives in shame.
I've done quite a bit of research on my own at Ancestry, but always helps when others, like yourself...can point out what I miss, like the registration district. Please understand, I'm still a bit of a novice at this and doing my research without any family stories told to me or to gain clues from. Plus I've lived 64 yrs in America and only 2 years of my life in England.
Basically hoping to connect with my Winter & Cunningham families. So that my own children and grandchildren will know of their full heritage, rather than just the bits I had previous to this very revealing news I recently received, that of my grandfather being Romany. Sure has answered many a question for me.

Hi Christine

I wonder if it may be best to move your post to the Surname Interests board.  Rootschat is linked into Google so if anybody uses it to search for those names - they will get a "hit" with this post.

Also - members researching those names will check that board

What do you think?

Good Morning Carole,

I think I'll leave my post here...as my Winter people are Romany. I also have a couple posts elsewhere on the 'Travelling People' forum about my Cunningham people. Got some good advice there as well.

Hello! rootbeer!
Always great to meet another Winter. I did the Ancestry DNA test and recently uploaded the raw data to GEDmatch for further analysis. Sure enough...there it was. Of course it's not a big percentage, but does show my DNA goes back to the Central & South Asian region to include 'Sindhi'. I've also recently done the 23andme dna test and am anxiously awaiting the results from that one, which is better than Ancestry's DNA test. I also have a very good percentage of 'Eastern European'.
Can you further elaborate on our 'same line'? Do we share grandparents, cousins?

Hi. it was another researcher who told me of the link, i can trace back to harry Winter born about 1830's? he wed Emily Smith. i'm from another branch of the same family as you i think a cousin to Jacob but im still working on the connection?

that brings me back to the Dna. i have just put my results into the Gedmatch so hopefully soon 4/6 weeks we will connect and help solve Winter questions.

@rootbeer...this is what I have.
Andrew Winter
    Your 2nd great grandfather
Birth abt 1821 in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England
Death 24 Mar 1886 in Hunslet, Yorkshire West Riding, United Kingdom
His brother was:
Jacob Winter
    Your 2nd great grand uncle
Birth Nov 1831 in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England
Does this info in some way compare to yours?
And GREAT about the GEDmatch. Please keep in touch...I can give you my Kit# at GEDmatch. Since last night I've been able to access the "Admixture" feature. But like you have to wait the '4-6 weeks' for full processing. So far, seems DNA bears out the Romany ancestry. Wonderful to meet another Winter....I've lived 64 years out of my 66 in the States, with barely any connection to my Winter family in England. Please feel free to contact me privately.
