My nephew (aged 40) has a best friend whom I have discovered (beyond any doubt) to be the son of the nephew of the wife of my first cousin once removed.
I have tried to determine the 'official' relationship (if any) there is between my nephew and his friend, but I am stuck! PLEASE can anyone help?
In case names may help, John, (my 1st cousin once removed), married Mary.
Mary had a brother Cyril
Cyril married Audrey, and their son Frederick is my nephew's friend.
The odd thing is, Cyril's wife Audrey was a friend of mine during our teenage years, and the relationship to me was spotted in a family member's wedding photo!

Hi giraffe,
Here's my twopennyworth!
Assuming your nephew is the son of your brother or sister and not a nephew via your OH, the he is the second cousin of John but in my opinion there can be no 'official' relationship between him and Frederick.
Will be interesting to see if anyone thinks differently though.
Regards,
Selina

I'm inclined to agree with Selina because the nephew and the friend do not share a common ancestor but I stand to be correct. Perhaps this table helps http://www.myrelative.com/html/kinship.html .

Thank you for the comments already received.
After much pottering around, I have tried to make the picture clearer, I hope this helps!
1. My nephew is my sister's son.
His friend is the son of the brother-in-law of our first cousin (male) once removed.
Is there a genealogical type of relationship between my nephew and his friend ?
My brain thinks I have it at one minute, the next minute I'm fuddled again!!
What I do know is that my nephew's friend's mother and I were great friends in our teenage years, but sadly lost touch.
Any help will be gratefully received,

Not meaning to be a nuisance, but I have another similar query :-[
My first cousin once removed (Norman) married the sister-in-law (Mabel) of Douglas.
Douglas has a son (who is married to another of my best friends).
I have worked it out that this son is the nephew of the wife of my first cousin once removed.
Is there a link apart from the 'by marriage' one? And have I got it right please?

Hi Giraffe
If you are a member of Ancestry, you could put all this on your tree, and click view relationship to me and that should give you the answer

Hi again Giraffe,
Just my opinion:
On the first case (John/Mary, Cyril/Audrey, Frederick) stays as in my earlier reply.
Second case - Norman married Mabel. Mabel's sister married Douglas and they had a son. So you are right in saying that the son is the nephew of Mabel and Norman is his Uncle by the fact that he is married to 'Aunt' Mabel.
As CathieM said you need a common ancestor and there is no common ancestor for Norman and this 'nephew' so there is no other connection to your family.
Best wishes,
Selina
