Title: Quick off the mark, or did I miss something?
Post by: Mike in Cumbria on Thursday 16 May 13 15:08 BST (UK)
In 1881, my great great grandfather William Williams was living in Bettisfield with my gg grandmother, Catharine. By 1891, Catharine appears to have died and William has remarried. There is also an 8 year old daughter, Lillie.

Looking at the registrations of possible births, deaths and marriages, it appears that all three events happened in 1884.

1881 census:  Cadney Road, Bettisfield (Flint)
RG11    Piece: 2663 Folio: 7    Page:8      Reg. District: Ellesmere
WILLIAMS, William, Head,  43, Horse Breaker, born 1838 Wem, Shropshire
WILLIAMS, Catherine,    39 Horse Breaker Wife, born 1842, Wem, Shropshire
WILLIAMS, John, Son, Single 12, Scholar, born 1869, Wem, Shropshire
WILLIAMS, William H, Single 5, Scholar, born 1876, Wem, Shropshire
WILLIAMS, Amelia H, Daughter, 3,  Infant born 1878, Wem, Shropshire
WILLIAMS, Thomas E, Son, Single, 1 Infant, born 1880, Bettisfield, Flintshire, Wales

1891 census:  Hampton Bank, Ellesmere, Lyneal RG number: RG12 Piece: 2121 Folio:   130 Page: 11   Reg. District:   Ellesmere
WILLIAMS, William, Head, Married   Horse Breaker, 54 born 1837 Wems Northwood, Shropshire
WILLIAMS, Emma, Wife   Married, 55, born 1836, Wem, Shropshire, Noneley
WILLIAMS, Lilly, Daughter, 8, Scholar, born 1883, Hampton Bank, Shropshire

Death Jan-Feb-Mar 1884     WILLIAMS,  Catherine      Age at death: 42 (ie born 1842)
Registration district:   Ellesmere,    Shropshire,  Volume no: 6A, Page no:   501

Birth Oct-Nov-Dec  1884    WILLIAMS,  Lillie Registration district: Ellesmere, Shropshire, Volume no: 6A Page no:    699

Marriage Oct-Nov-Dec 1884       WILLIAMS,  William Registration district:   Wem , Shropshire Volume no:  6A  Page no:   1449
Married either, Emily EVANS or, Emma PUGH

So, if all these do relate to my people, Catharine died in Jan/Feb/Mar of 1884 and in Oct/Nov/Dec, William married Emma and Lilly was born.

Unless anyone can see other options, it looks as though William was rather quick off the mark. I'll probably end up buying these certificates, but I'd be grateful for other eyes on it before I do so.

Cheers
(I also can't see a death for Thomas E Williams b1880 who disappears between the two censuses.)

Only had a quick look but I can see a lilly Beatrice born 1883 in ellesmere she would have been 8 in 1891, Lillie should have been only 7,
Catherine could have died as a result of a birth
Emma is a bit old to give birth at 47, tho quite possible.

Ellesmere caught my eye, 50 years ago we were moored there in a little wooden boat, in May surrounded by a thunderstorm of an intensity I have never seen again.  :) :) :) :) :)

Thanks Mike.
If Lillie Beatrice is my Lillie, then the sequence would work much better, with Catherine dying soon after the birth and william remarrying about a year later. Where did you see that birth?

Cheers

Found it.

WILLIAMS,  Lilly Beatrice born Jan-Feb-Mar 1883

Ellesmere Vol 6A Page 732

So that's a year before Catherine's death (if both of these assumptions are OK) and going on for two years before William and Emma's marriage. Time to buy some certificates I think.

Thanks again
Mike

Quick re-marriages were not uncommon when a man had a family of small children to care for or a woman (with or without children) needed financial support.
