Title: Identifying a Uniform
Post by: florrie98 on Thursday 16 May 13 12:03 BST (UK)
I have recently acquired an old family photo album. It is full of photos, unfortunately we don't know who any of them are.
So I am trying to find out any details from the photographs themselves.
There is a photo of a man in uniform taken in Birmingham, possibly around 1890/1900?
There is a stitched on badge on the left chest, it is rectangular with a crown stitched on and the number 92 beneath.
I have been advised that he probably isnt a policeman. I have also contacted the postal museum and they say it isn't a postal uniform.
Trying to find examples of other uniforms i have found quite difficult. e.g prison officer, customs officer?
Does anyone have any ideas as to identifying this uniform?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Rootschat...I wonder if he was a Prisoner ??? I suspect this photograph to be much earlier....around maybe 1860s because of the Newgate Frill style beard.... but for a closer date...can I suggest you post your photo here along with a scan of the back including corners as it is a good dating tool:

I had briefly considered the fact that he might be a prisoner. That could be interesting. It could well be earlier than 1890/1900. I didnt really know but i think other photos in the album are around the 1890s/1900s thats why i plumped for that time.
I am going to try and find images of the other suggestions also.

This is the reverse of the photo below.

Thanks

I just realised you meant post the image on the other thread. I will do that also.
Thanks

The back looks to be later maybe 1870s but not sure...It could be a reprint.

Firerman?
Someone once told me the number underneath relates to a particular fire station.

Just a thought.

Lovely photo

Hi,
Type in on Google ,
J Burton Birmingham photographers and a whole lot of info comes up.
You may even come across some possible match photos. Gives dates etc and comparisons.
They also seem to have travelled around.

Could he be a nightwatchman?

His buttons (on greater magnification) seem - and I only say seem - to have an anchor on them, which is I seem to recall, is the city's silver hallmark.

I don't think a prisoner would have such a printed reverse/back to his photograph.

Looking at that badge.  He certainly had some official post.  The crown on it suggests so.  Difficult to date, but someone else is probably more astute in these matters.

Shirley made a good suggestion about looking at the web site.  The back of the photo is identical to one one there.  It says that particular design became popular in the early 1870's,
