Any one out there with a link of a Romaine to a Banks in Potterne around 1860?
Could involve an illegitimate child.

hi there,
have just had a look at this: the Wiltshire bmd is showing a structure of children for William... being an un-named, Mary and Elizabeth at Potterne to spouse Tyler......
family search.org is showing structures for William/Mary-Anne(nee tyler) at Potterne, a Richard/Martha at Uchfont and a Maria as soul parent on records also at Potterne......
realistically unless you can find the child on the freebmduk as Banks (which for Wiltshire may be hard to distinguish from other Banks branches in the county) I would say its going to be almost impossible to find "ye bastard child" unless Maria is the mother......
sorry I cannot be of more assistance with this request

Thanks "Fast Fusion" more or less what I thought.
Some one in the family thinks he has seen info on a will about it.To do with payments but can't remember where or when! Guess I'll have to wait to read through reams of copies of old documents!
Thanks for trying.M.

Hi
Would you tell us the detail of what you are trying to dis/prove?
That may help us to help you?

Suspicion is that John Biggs Banks may have fathered a child of a Romaine in the Potterne or maybe Devizes area and that there was a legal agreement possibly payment. So....
Who was the mother ?
Who was the child ?
What was the settlement ?
The child would be part of my direct family tree.

Hi Have you checked " Justice warrants to apprehend the putative fathers of bastard children" it's in ref PR/Pottern: St Mary/1172/170 and is held at the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives at Chippenham. I found this on nationalarchives.gov.uk

Have checked the Justice Minutes Books for Potterne including Worton & Marston as the Romaine surname crops up in the tithing of Worton also in the Devizes volumes and there does not seem to be a judgement recorded for a bastardy case involving the surnames of Banks or Romaine. That doesn't mean there wasn't one just that there is none recorded. It may be worth checking overseers accounts for the union workhouse in Devizes as its possible a single mother with a child would end up needing parish assistance.
