Mary is shown as married in 1881 & 1891 but is a milliner which indicates she is not being supported by her husband.  Looks like they were separated

What was John's occupation on the marriage cert?   How old was he and what was his fathers name and occupation

You might have a slight problem here as there are at least 6 John Rules of about the right age in Camborne in the 1861 census. If you haven't already done so you need to buy the marriage certificate to make sure that you follow the correct family.

Another way would be to track all those John Rules and see if you can eliminate any.

Mary is married throughout the census' and I found their marriage on BMD so I have no information about John Rule.

John may have been a mariner - the fact that they married before the 1871 census yet Mary is living with her parents suggests it was either a very short lived marriage or John's job took him away from home.

If you want to pursue John's ancestry - the only way is via a copy of the 1871 marriage cert

Even though she describes herself as married another alternative is that he died. A lot of the John Rules were miners - he may have been killed in a mining accident.

Camborne is about four to five miles from the nearest ports (Hayle or Portreath) & its main industry was mining so it is likley that John was a miner. During this period it was common for miners to be working abroad so it is possible for John to be in the US or Australia & died abroad.

Have you found Mary in the 1901 to see if she was a widow?

Thanks for all the replies.
There is a good chance that the Mary Ann Rule buried 1897 is the correct person.
I have found her son, also called John ::),living in Camborne in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
In 1901 John is living with his wife Grace and his sister Susan in Carnarthan Street,Camborne.
He is  with his wife Grace and son, also called John ::), in 1911.

Susan was 9 yrs old in 1891 -- it would be interesting to have a look at her birth certificate! But that could be hard to do ...

Only two Susan Rule births were reg 1880-1883: one in Helston reg dist 1880 (who is with parents James and Elizabeth in 1881), and a Susannah Mary in West Ham in 1883.

It would seem that Mary was either widowed early or long estranged from John, and I would suspect the latter. Susan's birth was likely registered in her actual father's name.

Her husband John's father's name and his and his father's occupation, from the marriage certificate, really are kind of essential, to find out any more about him.

I'm an idiot - I read the 1901 census and then decided it was the 1891 census, didn't I?
Thanks for following up on my mistake there. ;)
