I have just received two certificates for marriages for the same people two years apart. At least I think they are the same people. The husband is Edward William Wilbraham Griffiths Houseal and the two wives are Maria Vicq de Villenoxe (first marriage dated 25th June 1864) and Maria Vick (2nd marriage dated 12th December 1866). EWWG Houseal is described as a widower for both marriages, which he is, as his first wife Mary died Mar 1864 Holborn, Maria is described as a widow in the first marriage and as a spinster in the second.
I'm sure they are the same people but can anybody think of a good reason why they should marry twice?

Interesting that whilst describing herself as a widow at the time of the first marriage her father Joseph appears to also have the surname of Villenoxe. Who does she list as her father in the second marriage?

The 1964 marriage took place in Lambeth whilst the 1866 marriage took place in Hastings. Makes me wonder if she had anything to hide; perhaps she had a husband who was still alive at the time of the first wedding who died before 1866 thus leaving her free to remarry legitimately. And going to Hastings to do it, with a slightly different name, would ensure that fewer awkward questions might be asked.
This is all supposition, of course, but could be one of many reasons for two weddings!

His first wife Mary aged 75 died on 14th Jan and was buried on 18th January 1864 at St James's St Pancras.

May I please ask
Can (oops, YOU) find one or two death registrations for his second wife .... and if one of those is earlier than 12 Dec 1866 then perhaps may I ask
was he thrice married ;D
ADDING, of course, if you have the signatures of the bride for the two marriages, there's always the RChat Decipher board to offer opinion as to if one and the same person signed both mcs
