Title: William WADE - Ironmonger Stourbridge
Post by: plunquet on Tuesday 07 May 13 00:48 BST (UK)
I have been doing a little research about Catholics in Stourbridge about 1800 and this man's name has come up together with a reference to his will. Can anybody help me find out a little more about him and maybe when he died? I'd like to find a copy of the will if at all possible. The name of the business was Wade and Green.

1798 Land tax
Wade and Green occupying land owned by executor of R Back Stourbridge for 10 " 5 1/2 d
The business was on the High St opposite Market St.
Their partnership was dissolved 25.3.1819 in the London gazette.By this time the partners  where Thomas Green and James Wade so William must have died by 1819.His will should be at Worcester's new archives the Hive.James goes on to form his own company James Wade and company iron braziers.
There is a record of a deed being deposited with the company Wade and Green  as a security as early as 1779 at Dudley Record Office,so the company must have been in existence by then.

Thank you so much, Ciderdrinker. I know Thomas Green died about 1823/4 so presumably the partnership with James was dissolved when Thomas 'retired'. I'm not very sure how you go about searching for wills. Is there an online register or do you have to contact the Worcester archives. Sorry to be a bit dense but I'm in New Zealand and haven't had experience with wills before.

Thanks

Good Morning
Don't worry Plunquet, wills can be quite confusing but in this case the answer is quite simple.
After 1858 in England and Wales there is a online index and each will costs about £6 to order.
Before that the Will will have been proven by the Bishop and stored at that counties archives, unless they were mega rich and had land in to dioceses.
So William Wade's should be in Worcestershire and stored at Worcester. If you visit you pick up the index a A4 booklet in alphabetical order of the shelf ,find the year and will number then look it up on the  microfilm for that year. All free of charge.
As you live in New Zealand I doubt you'll be making a trip so it's a matter of contacting the archives and getting them to make a copy. They print it off microfilm at 80p a page last time I asked ,so it will be quite expensive before you add on their time. They're quoting £7 for the first page on their website. And research comes in at £20 per hour, hopefully they won't charge you that.
Their contact is hiveadminteam[-- at --]worcestershire.gov.uk and they are called The Hive(the building looks like a giant bee hive).
Hope that helps and you have some look with them.I had a quick look at Old Swinford parish records up to 1809(the parish for Stourbridge at that date ) but no Wades.so I'm afraid i can't tie down the date of his death.
All the best

I will be visiting the Hive in the next week or two and will be happy to look for a will.

That is a really kind offer, Kay. Thank you very much. Would it be too much to ask you to look out for the Will of Thomas Green as well. Thomas was was William Wade's partner for some time. I need to check his death date but I think it is 1823/24.

I'll check my notes when I get home.

Thank you once again.

Not a problem if you can confirm the year of his death

Hi Kay

I've looked up the notes I have written by his grandson and the date of death is 30th August 1823. I've not ever checked for his death though and only have these details to go by. They were a Catholic family and the childrens' baptisms were recorded at Harvington Hall. Anyway any help will be gratefully received. Thank you once again.
